Council Tax Reduction Renewal in North Yorkshire
There Is No Annual Renewal Form
If you're expecting a renewal letter with a form to fill in, it won't arrive. North Yorkshire Council's income-banded Council Tax Reduction scheme treats awards as ongoing. Your CTR carries forward automatically from one financial year to the next — you don't submit a fresh application each April.
This catches people off guard. Housing Benefit used to require annual renewals, and some councils outside North Yorkshire still run schemes with formal review dates. North Yorkshire's current working-age scheme uses a simplified income-banded grid system.
What Actually Happens Each April
Two things change when the new financial year starts on 1 April:
The scheme thresholds may shift. North Yorkshire Council reviews and adopts its working-age CTR scheme rules annually. The income band boundaries — the weekly income amounts that determine whether you get 100%, 75%, 50%, or 25% off your bill — can move. For 2026/27, a single applicant with assessed weekly income up to £151 qualifies for 100% support. That boundary was different in earlier years. When thresholds change, the council reassesses existing claims automatically against the new grid.
Your Council Tax bill changes. Annual precept rises from the council, police, and fire authority increase the base amount. Even if your CTR percentage stays the same, your remaining payment may be higher because the bill itself went up.
When your new Council Tax demand notice arrives, check the updated bill, any CTR applied, and your monthly instalments carefully — the percentage reduction should reflect your current income band.
What Evidence the Council May Need
The council's application checklist lists documents it uses to verify identity, income, capital, and benefit entitlement. Requirements depend on your circumstances:
- Self-employment evidence: for applicants not on Universal Credit, the checklist calls for profit-and-loss accounts or self-assessment tax returns to establish net profit.
- Capital evidence: the checklist calls for two consecutive months of full bank statements for all accounts to check capital against the £6,000 limit.
- Benefit changes: changes to Universal Credit elements or legacy DWP benefit status can affect your award and should be reported.
Provide requested documents by the stated deadline. If you need more time or are unsure what is required, contact the council promptly.

When You Do Need to Act
Your award continues automatically, but you still have obligations:
Report changes within 21 days. Tell the council within 21 days about changes that could affect entitlement, including income, benefits, partners or address, and capital approaching or reaching £6,000. This isn't a renewal — it's a change of circumstances report. Failing to report can create an excess CTR adjustment on your account.
Check your demand notice. Confirm the CTR percentage matches what you expect given the new year's band thresholds. If it looks wrong, contact the council before the first instalment is due.
If your award has ended. Contact North Yorkshire Council to confirm whether a new claim is needed and what you need to provide. CTR applications go through the council's online service portal at northyorks.gov.uk.
If Your Circumstances Changed Over the Year
Some people let small changes slide — a modest pay rise, a few hundred pounds more in savings, an adult child moving back in. These accumulate. The annual bill in April is a good prompt to review whether your award still reflects reality.
North Yorkshire doesn't apply non-dependant deductions, so an adult child moving in won't reduce your CTR. But a partner's income counts, and savings reaching £6,000 end your entitlement immediately — there's no taper.
If income dropped during the year and you didn't report it, contact the council to ask for a reassessment. For a late working-age CTR application, you can request up to 12 months of backdating and must show continuous good cause for not applying earlier.
The Bottom Line
No annual form, no renewal deadline, no renewal window. Your North Yorkshire CTR rolls over each April under the new year's scheme rules. Your job is to keep the council informed of changes and check each year's demand notice.
