North Yorkshire Council Tax Reduction Income Bands 2026/27: How Your Discount Is Calculated
How the Income Band System Works
North Yorkshire Council became a single unitary authority in April 2023. For 2026/27, its working-age Council Tax Reduction scheme uses an income-banded grid instead of traditional means-testing. It compares your weekly net income against fixed thresholds based on your household type, then assigns a flat percentage discount: 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, or nothing.
The simplicity is the point — but the cliff edges are sharp. Earning £151 per week as a single person gives you 100% off your bill. Earning £151.01 drops you to 75%. Understanding exactly where the thresholds fall matters.
The 2026/27 Income Band Thresholds
Single person:
- 100%: up to £151.00/week
- 75%: £151.01 to £201.00
- 50%: £201.01 to £263.00
- 25%: £263.01 to £331.00
- 0%: above £331.00
Couple (no children):
- 100%: up to £208.00/week
- 75%: £208.01 to £259.00
- 50%: £259.01 to £325.00
- 25%: £325.01 to £389.00
- 0%: above £389.00
Family with one child:
- 100%: up to £273.00/week
- 75%: £273.01 to £325.00
- 50%: £325.01 to £376.00
- 25%: £376.01 to £441.00
- 0%: above £441.00
Family with two or more children:
- 100%: up to £338.00/week
- 75%: £338.01 to £389.00
- 50%: £389.01 to £441.00
- 25%: £444.01 to £491.00
- 0%: above £491.00
The thresholds don't increase further for families with three or more children — two-plus is the top bracket.
What "Net Income" Actually Means Here
The council doesn't use your gross pay. They start with your net earnings after Income Tax, National Insurance, and 50% of any voluntary occupational or personal pension contributions. Then they subtract disregards:
- £25/week for a single person
- £50/week for a couple or lone parent
- £40/week if the household includes someone receiving a qualifying disability benefit (PIP, DLA, Attendance Allowance, or the ESA Support Component)
Several income sources are ignored completely: PIP, DLA, Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance, the ESA Support Component, Child Benefit, Child Maintenance, and the Universal Credit housing element.

Worked Example: Lone Parent Earning £280/Week
A working single parent with one child takes home £280 per week. They also receive PIP (£108.55/week) and Child Benefit (£25.60/week). Both PIP and Child Benefit are fully disregarded.
Start with net wages: £280.00. Subtract the lone parent disregard (£50.00) and the disability disregard (£40.00) because PIP is in payment. Assessed income: £190.00.
Compare against the "family with one child" bands. £190 falls well within the £0–£273 bracket. Result: 100% reduction.
Without knowing the disregards, this parent might have assumed their £280 weekly wages put them in the 75% band — or worse, not applied at all.
Worked Example: Couple Both Working
A couple with no children has combined net weekly earnings of £300. Capital is £500. Apply the £50 couple disregard: assessed income is £250. Against the couple bands, £250 falls in the £208.01–£259.00 bracket for a 75% discount.
The 2026/27 Band D amount for North Yorkshire Council services is £2,036.32. A 75% reduction on that amount is roughly £1,527; your full bill and award depend on your account's total liability.
Why the Calculation Matters Before You Apply
