How to Apply for Council Tax Reduction in North Yorkshire
Before You Start the Application
North Yorkshire Council's online service portal at northyorks.gov.uk is the route for Council Tax Reduction applications. The digital workflow begins with a benefits calculator, which estimates potential entitlement before transferring your details into the online claim form.
Before you open the form, gather these:
- Your 13-digit Council Tax account reference (starts with 9, printed on your bill)
- Two months of bank statements for every account you hold — current accounts, savings, ISAs
- Income proof: five consecutive weekly payslips or two monthly payslips. If you're self-employed and not on Universal Credit, bring your latest trading accounts or self-assessment return
- Benefit award letters: Universal Credit award statement, PIP/DLA decision letters, ESA notification — anything showing what you receive
- National Insurance number for you and your partner
If your total savings across all accounts are £6,000 or more, you won't qualify under the working-age scheme. Check before you apply.
Filling In the Online Form
The portal starts with a benefits calculator that estimates what you might receive. This is worth completing — it gives you a rough figure before you commit to the full form.
The application itself asks about your household composition, income, capital, and housing situation. A few things to watch:
Joint tenants who aren't partners must each submit a separate application. Your entitlement is calculated on your individual share of the Council Tax liability.
Universal Credit claimants: when you first claim UC through the DWP and tick the box saying you need Council Tax help, the DWP sends a notification to North Yorkshire Council. This protects the initial contact date. But you still need to log into the council portal, confirm your details, and upload local documents. The DWP notification alone doesn't complete your claim.
Partner's details are required if you live with a spouse or civil partner — their income and savings count alongside yours.
What Happens After You Submit
The council processes your application and applies any reduction directly to your Council Tax account. You'll receive an adjusted demand notice showing your new balance and revised monthly instalments.
Processing times vary, but if you need to chase progress, contact North Yorkshire Council on 0300 131 2 131.
Your award start date is usually the Monday after the council receives your application. If you've moved into a new property and apply within one month, the start date can be backdated to when your liability began.

Common Mistakes That Delay Applications
Missing bank statements: the council needs statements for all accounts, not just the one your wages go into. An overlooked ISA or savings account can stall the whole application.
Forgetting the UC housing element: some applicants include this in their income figure when completing the form. North Yorkshire's scheme fully disregards the housing element — don't count it.
Not uploading documents promptly: the portal lets you submit the form first and upload documents later, but delays in uploading push back your decision date.
The North Yorkshire Council Tax Reduction Process Guide includes a printable evidence checklist and a net income calculation worksheet so you can verify your figures before submitting. Getting the numbers right the first time avoids back-and-forth with the council.
