$0 Barnet Council Tax Reduction Checklist

Barnet Council Tax Reduction Documents Needed

Incomplete evidence is a common reason Barnet's Council Tax Reduction claims stall. The council sends a formal Information Request Notice, gives you 30 days to respond, and can reject the claim if you don't respond within that deadline without reasonable grounds — turning what should have been a 14-to-21-day process into months of back and forth. Here's the evidence list, with the details the council asks for.

Identity and Address

You need photo ID for both you and your partner (if applicable):

  • Valid passport
  • Photocard driving licence
  • National identity card
  • Biometric residence permit

Plus your 10-digit Barnet Council Tax account number — found on the top right of your council tax bill or demand notice.

Income Evidence

This is where most claims fail. The requirements depend on your income source:

Universal Credit claimants: Download the full PDF award breakdown from your UC online journal. This is the multi-page document showing every element — standard allowance, housing element, childcare costs, deductions, and verified net earnings. A screenshot of your payment amount is not accepted. Neither is the text message or the summary statement. The council needs the itemised breakdown to verify which income band you fall into.

Employed (not on UC): Five consecutive weekly payslips, three fortnightly payslips, or two consecutive monthly payslips. These must be official payslips showing tax, NI, and net pay — not informal wage slips or bank transfer receipts.

Self-employed: Three consecutive months of business accounts, your most recent Self Assessment tax return, and three months of business bank statements. If you haven't completed a Self Assessment yet, bring whatever trading records you have — invoices, receipts, client payment records.

Bank and Savings Statements

Three full months of complete, unredacted bank statements for every account:

  • Personal current accounts
  • Savings accounts
  • Joint accounts
  • Building society accounts
  • Any account held in your name or jointly with your partner

Complete means every page, every transaction. Redacted statements are rejected. Downloaded PDF statements from your banking app are fine — you don't need paper originals.

Household Composition

Dependent children: Birth certificates or your Child Benefit award letter.

Non-dependants (people over 18 living with you who aren't your partner): Proof of their income — payslips, benefit letters, or other evidence Barnet requests. The council needs this to calculate non-dependant deductions from your award.

For Specific Situations

Capital/savings near the £6,000 limit: The bank statements above cover this, but if you hold investments, Premium Bonds, or property other than your main home, you'll need certificates or valuations.

Backdating request: Medical evidence (GP letter, hospital discharge summary), bereavement documentation, or correspondence showing incorrect advice from an official body — whatever supports your "continuous good cause" argument for each month you want backdated.

Council Tax Discretionary Relief (CTDR): All of the above plus a detailed income and expenditure breakdown, your tenancy agreement, and supporting letters from medical professionals or debt advice agencies. This goes through the separate Grant Approval portal.

Tips for a Clean First Submission

  • Upload clear copies of your evidence. Barnet accepts good-quality photographs or scans through its online general enquiry form when it asks you to provide documents.
  • Make sure bank statements cover three consecutive, complete months up to the application date
  • Include statements for every account, even ones with small balances — the council uses these to verify your capital figure
  • If you cannot get a non-dependant's income evidence, contact Barnet to ask how it will assess the deduction. The weekly deduction depends on their income: £5 for income under £200 and £11 for income of £200 or more.
