How to Apply for Council Tax Reduction in Barnet

Barnet's Council Tax Reduction application sits behind the MyAccount portal, and submitting the wrong documents or missing a step can delay your claim by weeks. Here's how to get through it cleanly.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather these before you open the form:

  • Your Council Tax account number (10 digits, on the top right of your bill)
  • Photo ID for you and your partner: passport, driving licence, or biometric residence permit
  • Universal Credit statement — the full PDF breakdown from your UC journal, not a screenshot of the payment amount. You need the page showing every element (standard allowance, housing, childcare) and verified earnings
  • Payslips if you're employed: five consecutive weekly, three fortnightly, or two monthly
  • Self-employment records if applicable: three months of business accounts plus bank statements
  • Bank statements — three full months, unredacted, for every personal and joint account
  • Proof of children (birth certificates or Child Benefit award letter) and income details for any adults living with you

The Application Steps

Barnet processes Council Tax Reduction through its online Benefits portal, not through a paper form:

  1. Log in to your Barnet MyAccount at the council website
  2. Navigate to the Council Tax Support section and select "Apply for Council Tax Support"
  3. Fill in your household details — who lives with you, their ages, their incomes
  4. Upload clear copies of your evidence. Barnet also accepts good-quality photographs or scans through its online general enquiry form when you are asked to provide documents.
  5. Submit and note down your reference number

If you can't use the online form — whether that's a disability, language barrier, or no internet access — call 020 8359 2000 and choose Option 2. You can also have someone apply on your behalf with a signed Third-Party Consent Form or Power of Attorney uploaded alongside the evidence.

What Happens After You Submit

The target processing time is 14 to 21 working days for a complete application. If anything is missing, Barnet sends a formal Information Request Notice giving you 30 days to respond. No response in 30 days without good reason means the claim is rejected.

Once approved, the reduction appears as a credit on your Council Tax account — you'll get a revised demand notice with a lower monthly instalment amount. There's no separate cash payment.

The Universal Credit Trap

Starting a Universal Credit claim does not apply for Council Tax Reduction on your behalf. The DWP sends Barnet an electronic notification, and the council logs it as an "intention to claim," but you still need to complete the local form yourself. If you do so within one month of the council's invitation notice, your CTR start date is backdated to when your UC began.

Miss that one-month window and the automatic UC-intention backdating route no longer applies. A working-age claimant can still request up to six months of backdating by showing continuous good cause; otherwise the standard start-date rule applies.

Common Mistakes That Delay Claims

The most frequent rejection reasons are straightforward to prevent:

  • Submitting only a UC payment screenshot instead of the full PDF breakdown — the council needs the complete award breakdown
  • Redacting bank statements — Barnet requires complete, unredacted statements
  • Forgetting non-dependant income proof — if an adult child or relative lives with you, their income must be declared

One complete submission is faster than three rounds of evidence requests. The Barnet Council Tax Reduction guide walks through the documents Barnet asks for and provides a checklist to help you prepare them.
