How to Apply for Council Tax Reduction in Croydon Online

Croydon Council's main route for Council Tax Support applications is its online portal. If you cannot use it, contact the Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support team to ask about a paper form or an assisted application. If that sounds daunting, the process is more straightforward than the council's website makes it look. Here's what actually happens when you apply.

The Online Application Process

Online applications run through Croydon's My Account system, hosted on the NEC Software Solutions platform. The steps:

  1. Register or sign in to your Croydon My Account at croydon.gov.uk.
  2. Complete the CTS application form — it asks about your household, income sources, benefits, savings, and any other adults living with you.
  3. Upload your evidence — you get a one-month window from submission to provide supporting documents.
  4. Receive your decision — the council processes your claim and issues either a revised Council Tax demand notice showing the reduced amount, or a decision letter if you're refused.

Your entitlement starts on the Monday following the date Croydon receives your application. If you submit on a Wednesday, cover starts the following Monday. This makes timing matter — don't sit on a completed form.

What Documents You'll Need

Gather these before you start the form, because uploading them later means remembering to come back:

  • Proof of identity: passport, photocard driving licence, or national identity card (for you and your partner)
  • Proof of address: your Council Tax demand notice, tenancy agreement, or landlord register entry
  • Proof of income: last 5 consecutive weekly payslips, 2 monthly payslips, or a full Universal Credit breakdown statement
  • Proof of savings: last 2 full consecutive months of bank statements for every account you hold — current accounts, savings, ISAs, all of them
  • Proof of benefits: award letters for PIP, DLA, ESA, or Child Benefit if applicable
  • Non-dependant income: payslips or benefit statements for any other adults aged 18+ living in your home

The one-month evidence window is genuine — you can submit the form without everything attached and upload later. If you cannot provide the evidence within that window, contact the council to ask what to do next.

The Universal Credit Trap

This catches more Croydon residents than anything else. When you apply for Universal Credit through the DWP, you might assume Council Tax support is included. It isn't. The DWP shares your UC award data electronically with Croydon Council, but that data feed does not count as an application. You must submit a separate CTS application directly to Croydon.

People who miss this end up with months of full Council Tax bills stacking up before they realise what happened.

After You Apply

Once approved, Croydon doesn't send you cash. The discount gets applied as a credit to your Council Tax account, and you receive a revised demand notice with recalculated monthly instalments. If the adjustment creates a credit balance — because you've already overpaid — you can apply online for a refund to your bank account.

For the full evidence checklist, income band calculations, and a walkthrough of what happens if your circumstances change after you're approved, the Croydon Council Tax Reduction guide covers the entire process end to end.
