How to Backdate Council Tax Reduction in Dorset
The 3-Month Backdating Window
Dorset Council's working-age Council Tax Reduction scheme allows backdating for up to three calendar months before the date your application is received. If you were eligible during that period but didn't apply, you can recover the reduction you missed.
There's no discretion to go further back. Three months is the maximum, regardless of how long you've actually been eligible.
Two Requirements for a Successful Backdate
You need to satisfy both:
You must explicitly request it. Backdating isn't automatic. Either complete the backdate section within the online application form, or submit a separate written request. Don't assume the council will look at your circumstances and offer it.
You must prove continuous eligibility. You need to demonstrate that you qualified for CTR throughout the backdated period — same income thresholds, same capital limits, same household composition. That means providing evidence covering those months, not just your current situation.
What Evidence You'll Need
For the backdated period, Dorset Council will want:
- Payslips or income records covering the full three months — if your income varied, you need to show it stayed within your qualifying band throughout
- Bank statements for every account, covering the backdated period — to document capital against the £6,000 limit, which does not apply if you receive Income Support, income-based JSA, or income-related ESA
- UC award statements (if claiming Universal Credit) showing the element breakdown for each month in the backdate window
- Proof of household composition if it differed during that period
The more complete your evidence bundle, the faster the decision. Gaps invite queries and delays.

When to Request Backdating
The most common scenario: you moved onto Universal Credit and didn't realise you needed to claim CTR separately from Dorset Council. By the time you figure it out, you've already missed months of support. The backdating request recovers up to three of those months.
Other triggers: illness that prevented you from applying, a delayed benefit decision that wasn't resolved until after the period started, or simply not knowing the scheme existed.
What Happens If It's Approved
The council recalculates your council tax account for the backdated period, crediting the reduction for each month you qualified. If you'd already paid council tax during that time, the credit creates an overpayment on your account — you can request a cash refund from Dorset Council's Revenue Services team, or let it offset against future instalments.
A revised council tax bill is issued showing the adjusted balance for the rest of the year.
