$0 Dorset Council Tax Reduction Checklist

How to Apply for Council Tax Reduction in Dorset

Where to Apply

All Council Tax Reduction applications go through Dorset Council's online benefits portal at dorsetcouncil.gov.uk. The form walks you through household composition, income, benefits, and capital in one session.

If you can't manage the online form, call Dorset Council Customer Services on 01305 221000 to arrange telephone assistance or a face-to-face appointment. You can also ask a family member or advice worker to submit on your behalf — they'll need your written consent uploaded to the form so council officers can discuss your account with them.

Documents You'll Need

Gather these before you start the application:

  • Proof of identity and National Insurance number — passport, UK driving licence, or birth certificate plus a letter showing your NINO
  • Latest council tax bill showing your account number and property band
  • Income proof — 5 weekly payslips, 3 fortnightly, or 2 monthly. Self-employed applicants need to complete Dorset Council's Self-Employed Income Form plus business accounts or tax returns
  • Universal Credit statement — the full monthly breakdown showing every element (housing, carer, child, standard allowance), not just the bank deposit amount
  • Bank statements — 1 to 3 months for every open account (current, savings, Premium Bonds, investments)
  • Disability/household proof — DLA or PIP award letters, student certificates for any adult non-dependants living with you

Submit First, Upload Later

Don't wait until you have every document ready. Submitting the initial application form establishes your legal date of claim, and that date determines when your award starts — the Monday immediately following receipt. Dorset Council gives you roughly one calendar month from the application date to supply missing documents without losing your start date.

Delaying the whole application while you chase a missing payslip can cost you weeks of support you'd otherwise receive.

Common Mistakes That Delay Claims

Assuming Universal Credit covers it. Claiming UC through the DWP does not automatically trigger a local Council Tax Reduction claim. You must apply to Dorset Council separately. This misunderstanding leads to months of unclaimed support and avoidable arrears.

Uploading incomplete UC statements. The council needs the full element breakdown — not a screenshot of your bank deposit. Without seeing the housing, carer, and disability elements separately, the assessor can't apply the correct disregards and your income gets overstated.

Forgetting about capital. If your bank balances, savings, and investments total £6,000 or more, you're disqualified (unless you receive Income Support, income-based JSA, or income-related ESA). Check before applying — it saves time for everyone.

What Happens After You Apply

Dorset Council processes your application and issues two documents: a Decision Notice (showing your income band, discount percentage, and any non-dependant deductions) and a revised Council Tax bill with the reduction credited to your account. The remaining balance gets split across your monthly instalments.

If the decision looks wrong, you can request a formal review. For the full application workflow, income calculation worksheets, and backdating steps, the Dorset Council Tax Reduction guide walks through every stage.
