How to Apply for Council Tax Reduction in BCP
Start on the BCP Council Portal
All Council Tax Support applications in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole go through the council's online portal at bcpcouncil.gov.uk. There is no paper form to download — the entire application is completed online.
When you start the form, you will enter your council tax account reference number (printed on your bill), household details, income figures, and savings. The portal lets you save a partially completed application and come back to it, but draft claims are automatically deleted after 30 calendar days if you do not submit them.
Once you hit submit, you get an electronic confirmation receipt. That is not the end — you still need to provide supporting evidence.
The Evidence You Need to Upload
BCP Council splits evidence into two categories:
Digital uploads (scans, photos, or PDFs uploaded through the portal):
- Bank statements for every open account covering the last two months
- Your latest Universal Credit monthly assessment breakdown
- Five consecutive weekly wage slips or two monthly wage slips
- Tenancy agreement (if renting)
- Self-employed profit and loss account, or BCP's Supplementary Self-Employed Earnings Information Form
Original physical documents (sent by recorded post or delivered in person):
- Passport, UK driving licence, or original birth certificate
- Proof of National Insurance number (NINO card or P60)
Post originals to: Revenues and Benefits Services, BCP Council Civic Centre, Bourne Avenue, Bournemouth BH2 6DY.
BCP's evidence-submission window is one calendar month from the claim request. Use the date shown in BCP's acknowledgement or evidence request; if the deadline is unclear, ask the council which date applies. Miss that window and the council can refuse or cancel your claim.
What Happens After You Apply
Your application goes to a benefits assessment officer who checks your evidence against the income and capital rules. While this is happening, you must keep paying your council tax instalments. Submitting an application does not pause your bill.
If the council approves your claim, it credits the reduction directly to your council tax account. You will receive a revised Demand Notice showing the original annual charge, the CTR award, and your new monthly instalments.
The effective start date of your award is the Monday after BCP Council receives your completed application. If you think you should have claimed earlier, you can request backdating — but for working-age claimants, the maximum backdating period is one calendar month.

Common Mistakes That Delay Applications
Assuming UC covers it. Applying for Universal Credit through the DWP does not create a Council Tax Support claim. You must apply separately through BCP Council's portal. The DWP shares income data electronically, but the council still needs your local application to process anything.
Incomplete bank statements. The council wants statements for every account — current, savings, ISAs. Redacted or partial statements get sent back, and the clock keeps ticking on your one-month evidence deadline.
Ignoring the identity documents. Digital uploads are fine for income proof, but the original passport or driving licence must go to the Civic Centre by post. People forget this step and wonder why their claim stalls.
