What Documents You Need for BCP Council Tax Reduction
Two Types of Evidence, Two Submission Routes
BCP Council splits its evidence requirements into digital uploads and physical originals. Mixing up which goes where is one of the most common reasons applications stall.
Upload digitally (through the online portal as PDF, scan, or clear photo):
- Bank statements for every open account — current, savings, ISAs — covering the last two months. All pages, unredacted. The council checks both your balance and your spending patterns.
- Your latest Universal Credit monthly assessment breakdown (the full PDF from your UC journal, not just the payment amount)
- Five consecutive weekly wage slips, or two monthly wage slips
- Tenancy agreement if you are renting
- Self-employed profit and loss account, or BCP Council's Supplementary Self-Employed Earnings Information Form
- PIP, DLA, or Carer's Allowance award letters (if applicable)
Send physical originals (by recorded post or in person to BCP Council Civic Centre, Bourne Avenue, Bournemouth BH2 6DY):
- Passport, UK photocard driving licence, or original birth certificate
- Proof of National Insurance number — NINO card or P60
The council insists on physical originals for identity documents as part of its fraud prevention protocols. Scans are not accepted for this category.
The One-Month Deadline
BCP's evidence-submission window is one calendar month from the claim request. Use the date shown in BCP's acknowledgement or evidence request; if the deadline is unclear, ask the council which date applies. If you miss the window, BCP Council can refuse or cancel your claim.
This is why it helps to collect everything before you begin the online form. Once you have made the claim request, any delay in getting evidence together counts against the one-month window.
Common Evidence Mistakes
Partial bank statements. The council wants every page of every account. If you have three current accounts and two savings accounts, that is five sets of two-month statements. Missing one account can stall the whole claim.
Redacted statements. Do not black out transactions. The council's assessment officers need the full picture to verify income and capital. A redacted statement gets sent back for resubmission.
Screenshots instead of PDFs. For Universal Credit, download the full assessment period breakdown as a PDF from your UC journal. A screenshot of the payment amount is not enough — the council needs to see each element (housing, childcare, standard allowance, LCWRA) broken out separately.
Forgetting the physical identity documents. The digital evidence uploads and the physical originals are separate requirements. People complete all the uploads and then forget that their passport needs to go in the post. The claim sits in pending until those originals arrive.

Self-Employed Claimants Need Extra Paperwork
If you are self-employed, BCP Council will not accept raw receipts or a cash book. You need a formal profit and loss account showing gross trading receipts, allowable business expenses, net trading profit, then deductions for tax and National Insurance. Alternatively, you can complete the council's own Supplementary Self-Employed Earnings Information Form online.
The council's calculation starts from your net trading profit, so getting the P&L right directly affects your award.
