Documents Needed for Council Tax Reduction in Redbridge
The One-Month Evidence Window
Before anything else, know this: Redbridge gives you one month from the date of its evidence request to upload the required documents. The council does not send reminder letters before processing or closing incomplete claims. If you cannot provide everything by the deadline, contact the Benefits Service before it passes and ask how to proceed.
Mark the deadline stated in the council's request and set a phone alarm if you need to. This evidence window is an important part of the application process.
Documents Everyone Needs
Regardless of your circumstances, these are required for every application:
Proof of identity for you and your partner (if applicable):
- Passport, or
- Full UK driving licence, or
- Birth certificate
National Insurance number — your NI letter, a payslip showing your NI number, or a benefit letter that includes it.
Council Tax reference number — this is on your annual council tax bill or any letter from Redbridge about your council tax account.
Income Evidence by Situation
If you're employed:
- Two most recent monthly payslips, or five consecutive weekly payslips
- These must show gross pay, tax, National Insurance, and any pension deductions
If you're self-employed:
- Profit and loss accounts covering a representative period
- The council uses actual net income — unlike Universal Credit, Redbridge doesn't apply a Minimum Income Floor
If you're on Universal Credit:
- Your latest monthly UC Award Statement — the complete PDF from your UC online journal
- It must show every component: standard allowance, housing element, child elements, carer element, limited capability for work, and all third-party deductions
- A summary screen grab isn't enough — the council needs the full breakdown
If you receive other benefits:
- Latest award letters for any benefits you receive: PIP, DLA, Attendance Allowance, ESA, Carer's Allowance, Child Benefit

Capital and Savings Evidence
Bank statements covering two consecutive months for every account held by you and your partner. This includes:
- Current accounts
- Savings accounts and ISAs
- Building society accounts
If you hold investments (shares, unit trusts, premium bonds), you'll need recent valuation statements.
The council uses these to verify your total capital against the £16,000 ceiling and calculate any tariff income between £6,000 and £16,000.
Non-Dependant Evidence
For every other adult living in your home, you'll need proof of their status:
- If they're working: proof of their gross income (payslip or employer letter)
- If they're not working: proof of benefit receipt or full-time student status
- If they receive Carer's Allowance: their award letter (this zeros out their deduction)
How to Upload
Evidence goes through Redbridge's online portal at eforms.redbridge.gov.uk. Look for "Provide evidence to support your benefit claim" in the Benefits section. Upload documents as clear scans or photos — the portal accepts PDF and common image formats.
If you can't manage the digital upload, the Ilford Engagement Hub (Jubilee Gardens, IG1 2HX) and Gants Hill Engagement Hub (Redbridge Institute, Gaysham Avenue, IG2 6TD) offer assisted digital services.
For a complete evidence checklist you can work through item by item — including which documents are needed for specific scheme tiers and how to prepare a UC statement export that shows everything the council needs — our Redbridge Council Tax Reduction guide includes a printable evidence tracker with the one-month deadline built in.
