Documents Needed for Lambeth Council Tax Reduction
Lambeth processes Council Tax Reduction claims online. Supporting evidence is submitted digitally, and the council no longer verifies documents in person at the Civic Centre. Upload through the MyLambeth portal or Lambeth's dedicated guest upload route. Incomplete or illegible evidence can lead to more requests and delay a claim.
The Full Document Checklist
Identity and address (for you and your partner):
- Passport, UK driving licence, or biometric residence permit
- A recent utility bill or tenancy agreement showing your Lambeth address
Council tax liability:
- Your current Lambeth council tax demand bill (the account reference number is in the top-right corner)
- If you're a tenant, your tenancy agreement showing you're named on the council tax liability
Earned income:
- Five consecutive weekly payslips, or two consecutive monthly payslips
- Each payslip must clearly show gross pay, income tax, National Insurance, and any pension deductions
- Self-employed applicants should provide profit-and-loss accounts or an income self-declaration
Capital and savings:
- Two full consecutive months of bank statements for every account held by you and your partner
- This includes current accounts, savings accounts, ISAs, and investment accounts
- Statements must show the account holder's name, balance, and transaction history
Benefits and disability status:
- UC monthly statement (most recent)
- PIP, DLA, or Attendance Allowance award letters (if claiming exemption from non-dependant deductions)
- Carer's Allowance confirmation letter
- ESA or JSA award notice
Non-dependant adults in your household:
- Payslips or benefit award letters for each non-dependant adult aged 18 or over (not your partner, a joint tenant, a lodger paying commercial rent, or a live-in carer employed by a charity or commercial care agency)
- This determines whether a £10 or £16 weekly deduction applies to your award
How to Upload Without Getting Rejected
Follow Lambeth's current upload instructions for file formats and size. Common problems include:
- Blurry photos. Use a scanning app (Adobe Scan, Microsoft Lens) rather than a straight camera shot. The figures on payslips and bank statements must be fully legible; unclear evidence may be rejected or prompt a request for a clearer copy.
- Cropped pages. The council needs to see the full document — headers, footers, dates, and page numbers. Don't crop out sections to fit a smaller file.
- Wrong date range. Bank statements must be consecutive and cover the most recent two full months. A statement from three months ago paired with last month's won't satisfy the requirement.
- Missing partner's details. If you have a partner, their documents need to be included. The council assesses joint income and joint capital.
What Happens After Upload
Once your application and documents are submitted, Lambeth's benefits team reviews everything. If something is missing or unclear, they'll contact you — but this adds processing time. A complete first submission is the fastest path to an award.
When approved, you'll receive a decision notice showing your income band, the percentage reduction, and a revised council tax bill with updated monthly payments.
