Documents Needed for Council Tax Reduction in Wandsworth
Why Your Documents Matter More Than the Form
The application form for Wandsworth Council Tax Reduction is straightforward. The part that trips people up is the evidence. Wandsworth's Benefits Service must verify statements on the form, and missing documents can lead to follow-up requests.
Getting everything together before you open the form helps you avoid session timeouts and follow-up requests for missing information.
Identity Documents
You need two forms of ID per person — for both you and your partner if you are applying as a couple:
- Valid passport
- Photocard driving licence
- Birth certificate
- National identity card
- Marriage or civil partnership certificate
Your National Insurance number is verified separately. Acceptable proof: NI card, an official DWP benefit award letter, a P60 or P45, or a payslip showing your NINO.
Income Evidence
This is where the five-payslip requirement catches people off guard.
Employed: Five consecutive weekly payslips, three consecutive fortnightly payslips, or two consecutive monthly payslips. They must be recent and sequential — a random selection from different months gets rejected.
Self-employed: Audited accounts or a trading summary.
Universal Credit: Your most recent UC monthly assessment statement, including all pages with the full income breakdown. The summary page alone is not enough — the council needs to see how the DWP arrived at your payment figure.
Other benefits: Award letters for PIP, DLA, Carer's Allowance, ESA, or any other benefit you receive.

Capital and Savings Evidence
Two consecutive months of statements for every account you hold:
- Current accounts (all of them, including ones you rarely use)
- Savings accounts
- ISAs
- Building society accounts
Plus share certificates, investment platform statements, and evidence of any property or land you own other than your main home. Premium Bonds count as capital — include your Bond holding statement.
Household Composition
- Birth certificates for all dependent children
- Child Benefit award letters
- Adoption papers if applicable
If another adult lives with you (a non-dependant), evidence of their income may be requested to calculate any non-dependant deduction from your award.
Childcare Costs
If you are claiming a childcare expense disregard (up to £175 per week for one child, £300 for two or more), you need receipts or written confirmation from the registered childminder, nursery, or approved after-school provider showing the amount and frequency of payments. The child must be under 15, or under 16 if disabled.
How to Submit Your Evidence
Digitally: Upload files through the online application portal or email them to [email protected] quoting your council tax account number. Accepted formats: GIF, JPEG, PDF, PNG, TIFF, or Word. Each file must be under 10 MB.
In person: Bring original documents to the Customer Centre at The Town Hall, Wandsworth High Street, SW18 2PU. Staff scan and return originals immediately.
