How to Apply for Council Tax Reduction in Wandsworth
What Council Tax Reduction Actually Gets You in Wandsworth
Council Tax Reduction (CTR) in Wandsworth can knock between 75% and 100% off your council tax bill, depending on your income, household, and benefit status. The borough runs a five-tier scheme for working-age residents — Scheme 1 awards a full 100% reduction, while Scheme 5 covers 75%. Pensioners follow separate national rules.
For a Band D property charged £1,020.35 in 2026/27, a 90% reduction (Scheme 2) leaves you paying roughly £102 a year instead of the full amount. That is real money back in your pocket — but only if you actually claim it.
Universal Credit does not automatically trigger a Council Tax Reduction award. You must apply separately to Wandsworth Council, even if the DWP already has your income details.
How to Apply Online
The quickest route is through Wandsworth Council's online benefits portal at wandsworth.gov.uk. The digital form walks you through each section and lets you upload evidence files (GIF, JPEG, PDF, PNG, TIFF, or Word — under 10 MB each).
Before you start, gather:
- Two forms of ID per person (passport, driving licence, or birth certificate)
- Your National Insurance number (from an NI card, payslip, or DWP letter)
- Five consecutive weekly payslips, three fortnightly payslips, or two monthly payslips
- Your most recent Universal Credit assessment statement (all pages)
- Two months of bank statements for every account you hold
- Birth certificates and Child Benefit letters for dependent children
Having everything ready before you log in prevents the form from timing out mid-way — a common frustration that forces people to start over.
How to Apply by Post
If you cannot use the online portal, download the combined Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction form from wandsworth.gov.uk, or call the Benefits Service on 020 8871 8081 to request a paper copy.
Post the completed form with photocopied evidence to the Benefits Service. You can also drop off original documents at the Customer Centre reception at The Town Hall, Wandsworth High Street, SW18 2PU — staff scan and return originals on the spot.

When Your Claim Starts
Your CTR award starts on the Monday immediately following the date Wandsworth receives your formal application or you complete it online. Returning an incomplete form can jeopardise the entitlement start date, so check everything before you submit.
If you should have claimed earlier but had a good reason for not doing so — serious illness, a recent bereavement, or being actively misled by an official — you can request backdating for up to three months. You will need to explain the reason in writing and show it applies to the entire backdated period.
What Happens After You Submit
Wandsworth's Benefits Service reviews your application against the local 2026/27 scheme rules. They may contact you for additional evidence; respond promptly and make sure the application is complete, as returning an incomplete form can jeopardise the entitlement start date.
Once assessed, you receive a decision letter showing which scheme level you fall under (1 through 5) and how much reduction you have been awarded. If the decision is wrong or you disagree, you have the right to request a local review within one calendar month of receiving the notification.
For a full breakdown of the five scheme levels, income limits, capital rules, and the documents you need to prepare before claiming, the Wandsworth Council Tax Reduction guide walks through each step with printable worksheets and worked examples.
