How to Apply for Council Tax Reduction in Lambeth
Lambeth's Council Tax Reduction can knock up to 73.5% off your bill — but unlike Universal Credit, nobody applies for you. You have to do it yourself, through the council's own system, and missing a step means weeks of delay while your bill keeps growing.
Two Ways to Apply Online
Lambeth offers two digital routes. The MyLambeth portal is the better option: you create an account at lambeth.gov.uk, link your council tax reference number, and get access to status tracking, document uploads, and change notifications after you submit. If you'd rather not create an account, the standalone webform lets you apply without registering — but you lose the ability to track your claim online.
Both routes ask the same questions: who lives in your property, what you earn, what savings you hold, and whether you receive benefits. Have your council tax account number ready (top-right corner of your bill), plus National Insurance numbers for you and any partner.
There's no paper form to download. If you can't apply online, phone the Benefits Service on 034 5302 2312 or write to Lambeth Revenues and Benefits Service, PO Box 80771, London, SW2 9QQ.
What the Form Asks For
The application walks through four sections:
- Personal details — name, date of birth, NI number, address, and your council tax account reference
- Household composition — who lives with you, their ages, and whether any adults are non-dependants (they'll affect your award)
- Income — gross wages, tax, National Insurance, and pension deductions for the last five weekly or two monthly payslips; self-employed applicants need profit-and-loss figures
- Capital — balances across all bank accounts, ISAs, and investments (the cap is £10,000 for working-age applicants)
You'll also be asked whether you receive Universal Credit, PIP, DLA, Carer's Allowance, or ESA. These benefits are fully disregarded as income under Lambeth's banded scheme — they won't count against your earnings threshold — but the council needs to see award letters to confirm your status.
Common Mistakes That Delay Claims
Forgetting to apply separately from UC. The DWP notifies Lambeth when you claim Universal Credit, but that notification is not an application for Council Tax Reduction. You must submit the CTS form yourself.
Uploading unclear documents. Lambeth no longer verifies documents in person at the Civic Centre. Everything goes through digital upload — blurry phone photos of payslips or cropped bank statements may be rejected or prompt a request for clearer evidence, delaying processing. Use a scanning app and check that every figure is legible before uploading.
Leaving out non-dependant details. An adult aged 18 or over who lives with you and is not your partner, a joint tenant, a lodger paying commercial rent, or a live-in carer employed by a charity or commercial care agency may trigger a deduction from your award — £10/week if they're not working, £16/week if they are. If you skip this section, the council will ask for it later and your claim stalls.
Missing the capital question. If you're a working-age applicant and you and your partner hold combined savings of £10,000 or more, you're excluded from the standard scheme. There's no tariff income for capital below that threshold — savings under £10,000 are ignored entirely.

After You Submit
Your award generally starts on the first Monday after Lambeth receives your application. If you first contact Lambeth and return the completed form within its specified timeframe, the effective date can be the date of that initial contact. If your council tax liability begins in the same week you apply, entitlement starts on the date the liability begins. Processing times vary, but you can check status through your MyLambeth account. Once approved, you'll receive a decision notice showing your income band (1–5), your percentage reduction, and an updated council tax bill with revised monthly instalments.
If you think the decision is wrong, you have one month to request a formal reconsideration.
