Hunter Water Pensioner Rebate: Eligibility, Amounts and How to Apply
If you live in the Hunter region — Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Cessnock, or surrounding areas — your water and sewerage charges come from Hunter Water, not your local council. That means you need a separate application to get the pensioner rebate on your water bill, even if you've already claimed the council rates rebate.
How the Hunter Water Rebate Works
Hunter Water applies a fixed dollar credit to your quarterly bill. The rebate is set at roughly 27.25% of the bill for a typical household consuming 200 kilolitres per year.
The rebate is set each financial year under IPART's pricing determination and adjusts annually. You don't need to track the exact formula — the credit appears as a line item on your quarterly bill once approved.
Who Qualifies
The eligibility rules mirror the council rates rebate:
- You need a Pensioner Concession Card (Centrelink or DVA), a DVA Veteran Gold Card (TPI, EDA, or War Widow/Widower endorsement), or a formal DVA letter confirming Intermediate rate or TTI status
- You must own and live at the property as your principal place of residence
- Joint ownership with a spouse gives you the full rebate; joint ownership with a non-spouse reduces it proportionally
A Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, NSW Seniors Card, or standard Health Care Card does not qualify.
How to Apply
You can apply through:
- Service NSW — use its "claim the pensioner water rebate" transaction
- Hunter Water directly — apply through Hunter Water's own customer channel
Bring or have ready: your concession card number, your Hunter Water account number, and proof of property ownership and residency.
The rebate appears as a fixed credit on quarterly customer accounts. If your card, address, or ownership details change, contact Hunter Water to confirm what it needs to keep your account current.

Don't Forget the Council Rates Rebate
Hunter Water only covers your water and wastewater charges. Your local council handles the separate rates rebate (up to $250/year on ordinary rates and domestic waste). These are two different applications to two different organisations.
Where a local council supplies water directly, its water concession is handled through the council rather than Hunter Water. Check your bill to confirm which provider charges you.
For a complete walkthrough of every concession layer in NSW — council rates, water utility rebates, voluntary top-ups, backdating rules, and hardship provisions — the NSW Pensioner Rates Rebate Claim Guide covers each one.
Disputes and Missing Rebates
If a rebate disappears from your bill or you believe the credit amount is wrong, contact Hunter Water first. For unresolved disputes, the Energy and Water Ombudsman NSW (EWON) provides free, independent dispute resolution for Hunter Water customers. EWON can investigate missing rebates, correct billing errors, and institute payment plans if you're behind on your account.
