Coventry Council Tax Support Documents Needed: Full Evidence List
Why Your Documents Matter
Missing evidence is the most common reason Coventry council tax support applications stall. The council targets 2 to 4 weeks to process a complete claim, but if your evidence is incomplete, the clock doesn't start until everything is in. Some residents wait months simply because they didn't submit the right paperwork upfront.
Get everything ready before you log into the portal. The online form can time out during long pauses, forcing you to start over.
The Complete Evidence Checklist
Identity and Residence
- Passport, UK driving licence, or birth certificate — for you and your partner if applicable
- A utility bill or bank statement showing your Coventry address
- National Insurance number for you and your partner, if applicable
Employed Earnings
- Last 5 consecutive weekly payslips or 2 monthly payslips
- Each payslip must show gross pay, income tax deducted, National Insurance contributions, and any pension deductions
The council needs to see the full breakdown, not just the net pay figure. If your payslips don't itemise these, ask your employer for a detailed version.
Self-Employment Income
- Audited profit and loss accounts covering your most recent trading period, or
- Coventry City Council's own "Certificate of Earnings Form"
Note: the council does not allow deductions for depreciation or entertainment expenses when calculating self-employment income for Council Tax Support purposes. These are treated differently from HMRC self-assessment rules.
Capital and Bank Accounts
- 2 consecutive months of statements for every bank and building society account you hold
- This includes current accounts, savings accounts, ISAs, and even accounts with a zero or overdrawn balance
- Investment statements for any stocks, shares, or other financial assets
The council counts household capital, except personal injury compensation held in trust and statutory redress payments. If countable capital exceeds £16,000, you're disqualified from the scheme.
Benefits and Universal Credit
- Full Universal Credit statement showing each element and the net payment
- DWP award letters for any other benefits (ESA, PIP, DLA, Carer's Allowance)
- Use the official DWP PDF statements — screenshots of the UC journal are not always accepted
Non-Dependant Adults
- Proof of gross weekly income for any other adult (aged 18+) living in your home who isn't your partner
- Their payslips or benefit letters determine the non-dependant deduction rate applied to your claim
How to Submit Your Evidence
You have three options:
- Upload during the application — attach scanned documents or photos directly through the MyAccount portal
- Email after submission — send documents to [email protected] with your claim reference number in the subject line
- Post — send physical copies to Benefits Service, PO Box 7097, Coventry, CV6 9SL
If you're emailing photos of documents, make sure they're legible. Blurry phone photos of crumpled payslips cause delays.

Evidence for Backdating Requests
If you're requesting backdated support (up to 12 months for working-age claimants), you'll need additional evidence demonstrating "continuous good cause" — medical letters, hospital records, or statements from support workers explaining why you couldn't apply sooner.
For a printable evidence gathering worksheet that tracks exactly what you have and what's missing, the Coventry Council Tax Reduction guide includes one designed for this specific council's requirements.
