How Long Does Wandsworth Council Tax Reduction Take to Process?
Typical Processing Times
Wandsworth's 2026/27 scheme says the Council will decide within 14 days, or as soon as practicable after that, once it is satisfied that the application is properly completed and all required evidence and information have been provided. This period does not start simply when you begin an incomplete application.
A standard award starts on the Monday immediately following the date Wandsworth receives the formal application or you complete it online. A claim completed on 5 October 2026 starts from Monday 12 October 2026, even if the assessment takes longer.
What Slows Things Down
Missing evidence can delay assessment. If the Benefits Service cannot verify your income, identity, or capital from what you submitted, it may request additional information.
Common missing items:
- Not enough payslips (Wandsworth requires five consecutive weekly payslips, not four)
- Bank statements that do not cover two full consecutive months
- A UC assessment statement with only the summary page instead of the full breakdown
- Missing ID for a partner on a joint claim
Incomplete forms — skipped sections or unsigned paper applications — also trigger delays. The online portal flags mandatory fields, but the paper form does not prevent you from leaving sections blank.
Provide any requested evidence as soon as you can; the 14-day decision period begins only once the Council is satisfied that it has the required information.
What to Do While Your Claim Is Pending
Your council tax bill does not pause while you wait. Continue paying the amounts on your latest bill. If your claim is approved, check the revised bill for the reduction and any credit due.
If you cannot afford to pay while waiting:
- Contact a free debt-advice service such as Citizens Advice Wandsworth, StepChange, or National Debtline.
- Keep your claim reference number and the date you submitted — this proves you applied in good time.

Chasing a Delayed Claim
If your claim is still pending after you have submitted the requested evidence, contact the Benefits Service to ask for a status update:
- Email: [email protected] (include your council tax account number)
- Phone: 020 8871 8081
Ask for a status update and whether any additional evidence is needed. Sometimes requests for information get lost or the notification email goes to spam. A quick chase can unblock a claim that has been sitting in a queue.
Understanding Your Notification Letter
When the assessment is complete, Wandsworth sends a decision letter that tells you:
- Which scheme level you fall under (1 through 5 for working-age, or the national rules for pensioners)
- The percentage reduction applied
- Your weekly and annual CTR award amount
- The remaining council tax payable after the reduction
- How your instalments are adjusted going forward
Check the scheme level carefully. If you receive disability benefits, your earned income is below the applicable Scheme 4 or 5 cap, and the letter shows Scheme 4 or 5 instead of Scheme 1, the council may not have processed your benefit evidence correctly. Request a review within one calendar month of receiving the decision notice.
If the letter shows a lower award than expected, compare the income and capital figures the council used against your actual documents. Calculation errors — a disregard not applied, childcare costs overlooked, a non-dependant deduction applied when it should not have been — are fixable through the local review process.
The Wandsworth Council Tax Reduction guide includes a scheme-level identifier worksheet so you can verify the council's assessment against your own circumstances before deciding whether to accept or challenge the decision.
