How Long Does Brent Council Tax Reduction Take to Process?

There's No Published Processing Guarantee

Brent Council doesn't commit to a specific turnaround time for Council Tax Reduction applications. Processing depends on the complexity of your case, the completeness of your evidence, and how busy the Revenues and Benefits team is at the time.

What you can expect: once your completed application and all supporting documents are submitted through the "My Account" portal, the council assesses your household income against their income-band grid, checks your capital against the £6,000 limit, and applies any non-dependant deductions. A straightforward case with clean documentation can be processed relatively quickly. A case with missing evidence, self-employment income, or complex household arrangements will take longer.

What Slows Things Down

The most common cause of delays is incomplete evidence. Brent requires specific documentation to assess the claim; provide it with the application or within 14 calendar days of a formal information request:

  • Bank statements — two full consecutive months, unredacted, for every account held by the claimant and partner
  • Payslips — five consecutive weekly, three fortnightly, or two monthly payslips (most recent)
  • Universal Credit statement — the full digital breakdown from DWP showing all elements
  • Identity documents — for both claimant and partner
  • Non-dependant details — name, age, and employment status for every adult in the household who isn't your partner or dependent child

If anything's missing, the council issues a formal information request. You then have 14 calendar days to provide the missing documents. That 14-day clock can add weeks to your overall processing time — and if you don't respond, the claim can be refused.

The other common delay is self-employment evidence. Instead of payslips, self-employed applicants need audited accounts, HMRC self-assessment returns, or a detailed income-and-expenditure ledger covering recent trading periods. Pulling this together takes time, and the council may ask follow-up questions.

Your Claim Date Still Counts

Here's the important part: your entitlement starts from the date the completed claim is received, not from when the council finishes processing it. Specifically, it starts on the Monday following your claim submission date.

So even if it takes several weeks to process, the reduction is applied retroactively from your claim date. Once approved, the council adjusts your council tax account and issues a revised bill with recalculated monthly instalments. Any overpayment between your claim date and the processing date is credited back to your account.

If you moved into a new address in Brent, there's an extra wrinkle: entitlement starts on the exact date liability begins, provided you submit your application within one calendar month of moving in.

The Award Letter

When the council makes a decision, you'll receive a Decision Notice (the award letter). This sets out:

  • Your income band classification (Band 1 through Band 5)
  • The percentage reduction applied
  • Any non-dependant deductions
  • Your net remaining council tax liability
  • The revised annual bill with adjusted monthly instalments

Read this carefully. Mistakes happen — an incorrect income band placement or a missing non-dependant deduction can make a significant difference. If something looks wrong, you have the right to request a formal review under Section 16 of the Local Government Finance Act 1992.

What to Do While You Wait

Continue paying whatever you can toward your council tax bill. Not paying while your application is pending doesn't pause enforcement — if you miss instalments, the standard recovery process (reminder, final notice, summons) can still run.

If you genuinely cannot pay anything while waiting, contact Brent's Revenues and Benefits team and explain that you have a pending CTR application. Ask them to note this on your account — it won't formally suspend enforcement, but it flags your situation.

If your application has been pending for an unusually long time and you haven't heard anything, check that the council received all your documents. Log in to "My Account" and review any information requests. Unanswered requests are the most common reason claims stall.

Our Brent Council Tax Reduction guide includes a document preparation checklist to help you submit a complete application the first time, avoiding the most common causes of processing delays.
