How to Apply for Council Tax Reduction in Brent Online
The application goes through Brent's My Account portal
Brent requires a completed Council Tax Reduction claim through the council's My Account online portal. A benefit calculator estimate or informal enquiry does not count as a claim — the completed online submission establishes your claim date.
If you haven't already, register for My Account at brent.gov.uk. You'll need an email address and your council tax account number (printed on your bill).
Documents to upload before you start
Brent requires specific evidence uploaded to the portal either during the application or within 14 calendar days of a formal information request. Missing documents delay processing, so gather everything first:
- Identity: passport, photocard driving licence, or National Insurance letter — for you and your partner
- Council tax liability: your tenancy agreement, mortgage statement, or Land Registry document
- Income proof: 5 consecutive weekly payslips, 2 fortnightly payslips, or 2 monthly payslips (most recent)
- Universal Credit: the full digital breakdown from your DWP online account showing every element
- Bank statements: 2 complete months, unredacted, for every account you and your partner hold
- Non-dependant details: full name, age, and whether each adult in your home works or not
Self-employed applicants need audited accounts, an HMRC self-assessment return, or a formal income and expenditure ledger covering recent trading periods.
Step-by-step application process
- Log into My Account on brent.gov.uk
- Navigate to the Council Tax Support application section
- Fill in your household details — the form asks about everyone living at the address
- Enter your income and your partner's income (Brent will cross-check against DWP data if you're on Universal Credit)
- Declare your savings and capital — remember the £6,000 hard cutoff
- Upload all supporting documents
- Submit and note your reference number
That reference number is important. It proves when you applied, which matters for backdating and appeal deadlines.

What about the UC notification?
If you've recently claimed Universal Credit, the DWP sends an automated notification to Brent Council. This can help establish your claim start date — but it does not replace the actual application. You still need to complete the full online form yourself. Many residents assume the UC claim handles everything and miss out on support.
Processing times and what happens next
Brent doesn't publish a fixed processing time. Missing evidence can delay an assessment.
Once processed, you'll receive a Decision Notice showing your income band, any non-dependant deductions, and the net amount credited to your council tax account. Your annual bill gets recalculated and you'll receive a revised bill with adjusted monthly instalments.
Moving into Brent for the first time
If you've just moved into the borough, your entitlement can start from the exact date your council tax liability begins — provided you apply within one calendar month of moving in. Miss that window and your claim starts from the Monday after you apply instead.
The Brent Council Tax Reduction guide includes a pre-submission evidence checklist and a walkthrough of every portal screen to help you avoid the most common processing delays.
