Wiltshire Council Tax Reduction Processing Time: What Happens After You Apply

How Long Does a Wiltshire CTR Claim Take?

Wiltshire Council does not publish a fixed turnaround guarantee for Council Tax Reduction claims. The time can depend on whether the council has the evidence it needs; cases involving self-employment income, backdating requests, or missing documents can take longer.

The single biggest factor in processing speed is your evidence. The online portal gives you a 14-day save-and-return window to complete your application, and the council generally allows one month to supply any additional documents they request. If you miss that window, your claim can be cancelled, and you would need to start again.

Three things that slow claims down:

  • Missing documents. The council needs two consecutive months of bank statements for every open account, consecutive wage slips, and original proof of identity sent by post or in person. A partial submission sits in a queue until the remaining evidence arrives.
  • Self-employment evidence. Self-employed applicants must complete Wiltshire Council's specific self-employed trading statement alongside their accounts. This form takes longer to assess than standard payslips.
  • Backdating requests. If you are asking the council to backdate your award, you need to demonstrate continuous good cause for the entire period you are claiming. The council reviews that evidence separately, adding time to the decision.

What the Notification Letter Tells You

Once the council makes a decision, they send a formal notification letter. This letter confirms:

  • Whether your claim was approved or refused
  • Your award amount and how it was calculated
  • Whether you are in the protected group (up to 100% reduction) or the standard group (maximum 80% reduction, with a 20% minimum payment)
  • The effective start date of your award
  • Any non-dependant deductions applied

Check the letter carefully against your own records. The most common errors involve non-dependant deductions being applied incorrectly, or income figures that do not match your submitted evidence. If something looks wrong, you have one calendar month from the date on the letter to request a formal reconsideration in writing.

Your council tax account is updated automatically once the award is applied. You will receive a revised demand notice showing the new balance, spread across your remaining monthly instalments.

What Happens If You Are Overpaid

An overpayment — officially called an "excess reduction" — happens when a reassessment reveals you received more CTR than you were entitled to. Common triggers include a change in income you did not report promptly, savings crossing the £10,000 working-age capital limit, or a household member moving in or out.

When an excess reduction occurs, the extra credit is removed from your council tax account. The council issues a revised demand notice, and the amount you owe is spread across your remaining instalments for the financial year. CTR overpayments are not clawed back as a separate debt — they simply increase the council tax balance on your account.

If you disagree with the overpayment calculation, you can request a reconsideration using the same one-month written process.

What to Do While You Wait

Your council tax bill does not pause while your claim is being processed. You should continue making payments on the original bill amount to avoid falling into arrears. If your claim is approved, the reduction is backdated to your effective start date and credited to your account, which may create an overpayment credit. You can then request a refund of any excess paid, or let it offset future instalments.

If you are struggling to pay while waiting, contact the Wiltshire Council Benefits Team on 0300 456 0110 to discuss instalment arrangements. For anyone already in arrears, free debt advice is available from StepChange (0800 138 1111) and National Debtline (0808 808 4000).
