Waltham Forest Council Tax Support Documents: What Evidence You Need and the One-Month Deadline
The Evidence the Council Needs
When you apply for Council Tax Support in Waltham Forest, the online form is only the first step. You then need to upload supporting documents through the Citizen Portal; missing evidence can delay processing.
Here's the full list, broken down by category:
Identity and address — a valid passport, UK driving licence, national identity card, or birth certificate for you and your partner.
Council tax liability — your council tax bill or account reference number. This proves you're the person legally liable for the charge.
Universal Credit or DWP benefits — a full PDF of your most recent UC award breakdown. Not a screenshot of the app, not a partial view — the complete statement showing all elements, deductions, and child components. If you receive ESA or PIP, you need the award letters.
Earned income — five consecutive weekly payslips, three fortnightly ones, or two monthly payslips. They must show gross pay, tax deductions, NI contributions, and any pension deductions. The key word is "consecutive" — gaps between payslips create questions.
Self-employment income — trading accounts for the previous 12 months, a profit-and-loss statement, or a tax assessment.
Savings and capital — bank statements for every account you hold (current accounts, savings, ISAs, building society accounts), covering the last two complete calendar months. Every account, not just your main one.
Household composition — Child Benefit award letter if you have children, proof of pregnancy if applicable, and evidence of any non-dependant adults' employment status.
The One-Calendar-Month Deadline
Once you submit your application through the Citizen Portal, outstanding evidence must be submitted within one calendar month.
If you expect a delay, contact Revenue Services on 020 8496 3000 before the deadline to ask how to proceed.
Gather as much as possible before you submit, but do not delay the application just to assemble every document. Upload what is outstanding within one calendar month, and use PDFs where available.
Common Evidence Mistakes
Bank statements from the app aren't always accepted. Some banking apps generate statements that omit the account holder name or sort code. Download the official PDF statement from your bank's website or request paper copies.
Not enough payslips. If you're paid weekly, the council asks for five consecutive slips. If you've just started a job and don't have five yet, apply promptly and contact the council about what evidence to provide.
Forgetting a savings account. The £6,000 capital limit covers all your accounts combined. If you have a forgotten ISA with £800 sitting in it, that counts. Omitting an account and having it flagged later creates an overpayment.
Screenshot instead of PDF. The Universal Credit journal on the app shows your award, but a cropped phone screenshot often cuts off essential details. Log into your UC account on a computer and download the full award breakdown as a PDF.

What Happens After You Upload
The council processes your claim and sends a formal decision notice. This shows the income band they've placed you in, any non-dependant deductions, and the percentage reduction applied. The credit goes straight onto your council tax account and you'll receive a revised bill.
If something doesn't look right — wrong income figure, missing vulnerability status, a deduction for a non-dependant who should be exempt — you can request a formal review.
