Sunshine Coast Pensioner Rates Concession: Tiers, Amounts and Deadlines

The Sunshine Coast is one of Queensland's faster-growing council areas, and rate increases have hit pensioner households hard. The good news is that eligible pensioners can claim a combined state and council concession worth up to $543 a year — but the Sunshine Coast uses a tiered system that catches some people off guard.

How the Tiers Work

The Sunshine Coast layers the statewide $200 subsidy with its own council remission, but the council component varies depending on your title arrangement and pension level:

Situation Council Remission Combined with State $200
Sole title, maximum pension $343/year $543/year
Sole title, part pension $171.50/year $371.50/year
Joint title, maximum pension $268/year $468/year
Joint title, part pension $98/year $298/year

"Sole title" means you are the only person on the property title deed. "Joint title" means you share ownership with another person — whether a spouse, partner, or someone else.

This distinction matters because a married couple who jointly own their home receives the joint-title rate, even if both hold Pensioner Concession Cards. The combined maximum is $468, not $543.

When Your Concession Starts

The Sunshine Coast has specific rules about effective dates. Your concession starts from whichever of these three dates is latest:

  • The start date on your concession card
  • The date you began occupying the property
  • The first day of the current rating period

If you apply mid-way through a rating period, the council pro-rates your concession based on the number of days remaining. Applications submitted after 1 July are typically applied as a credit on the next rate notice.

Backdating Is Limited

If you were eligible in a previous financial year but didn't apply, don't count on getting money back. Sunshine Coast Council's policy generally restricts concessions to the current rating period. Limited exceptions exist where Centrelink or DVA backdated your card grant date due to processing delays and you applied to council within a reasonable time. Even then, backdating is typically capped at 12 months.
