How Much Council Tax Reduction Can You Get in Stockport?

The headline answer from Stockport Council is that working-age residents can get "up to 100% support." That's technically true but misleading for most people, because the council caps the eligible liability at Band A or Band B rates — not your actual bill. If you live in a Band D property, the most Council Tax Reduction can cover is the Band A equivalent, leaving you to pay the rest.

The Band A and Band B Caps

Stockport's 2026/27 scheme caps working-age eligible liability like this:

  • Standard cap: Band A — £1,745.93 per year (£33.48 per week). This is the maximum liability used in your calculation, even if your property sits in Band D (£2,618.90) or higher
  • 3+ bedroom households: Band B — £2,036.92 per year (£39.07 per week). If your household needs three or more bedrooms under Local Housing Allowance size criteria, the cap lifts to Band B
  • Disabled Persons Relief recipients: no cap — if someone in your household gets Disabled Persons Relief (the disabled band reduction scheme), the cap is removed entirely and your actual post-reduction Council Tax liability is used

This means a single person on Universal Credit in a Band D property could qualify for 100% of the Band A rate but still owe the difference between Band A and Band D — roughly £873 per year, or about £73 per month.

The £1 Per Week Minimum Floor

Stockport enforces a minimum award of £1 per week (£52 per year). If the means test calculates your support at less than £1 per week, the council rounds it down to zero. You get nothing.

This floor catches people whose income sits just above the taper threshold. The 20% taper on excess income can whittle the award down to a few pence, and the £1 minimum floor then eliminates it completely.

A Worked Example

Take a single working-age resident in a Band C property (£2,327.91 per year) with the 25% Single Person Discount applied:

  1. After Single Person Discount: £2,327.91 × 0.75 = £1,745.93 per year
  2. Band A cap applied: £1,745.93 (in this case the discount already brings it to the Band A level)
  3. No non-dependant deductions (lives alone)
  4. Income at or below applicable amount: maximum weekly award = £33.48

The full £33.48 per week gets credited to their Council Tax account, effectively zeroing out their bill up to the Band A cap.

Now change the scenario: same person, but earning £40 per week above their applicable amount.

  1. Excess income: £40 per week
  2. 20% taper: £40 × 0.20 = £8.00 reduction
  3. Weekly award: £33.48 − £8.00 = £25.48 per week
  4. Annual award: £25.48 per week is about £1,328.60 over 365 days

They'd still owe about £417 per year — roughly £35 per month over 12 instalments.

How Non-Dependant Deductions Reduce Your Award

If another adult lives in your household (a grown child, a friend, a relative who isn't your partner), Stockport deducts either £5 or £10 per week from your maximum award before the taper applies:

  • Gross weekly income under £188: £5 per week deduction
  • Gross weekly income £188 or above: £10 per week deduction

These deductions are applied per non-dependant. Two adult children earning above £188 each means £20 per week deducted from your maximum award — that's £1,040 per year wiped off before the income taper even starts.

Some situations are exempt: no deduction applies if you or your partner receive Attendance Allowance, the care component of DLA, the daily living component of PIP, or Armed Forces Independence Payment. Full-time students living with you are also exempt.

Comparing Stockport to Neighbours

Stockport's scheme is relatively generous on maximum award percentage (up to 100%) but strict on the band cap and capital limit. Here's how it stacks up:

Council Max Award Band Cap Capital Limit
Stockport Up to 100% Band A (B for 3+ beds) £8,000
Tameside 75% Band A £6,000
Rochdale 85% Band A £16,000
Trafford 100% Band B £16,000

Stockport's 100% maximum and Band B option for larger households is strong, but the £8,000 capital limit is one of the tightest in the region.
