Stockport Council Tax Bands 2026: Full Rates and How to Reduce Your Bill

Stockport's 2026/27 Council Tax rates are among the highest in Greater Manchester. The Band D rate rose by £143.59 to £2,618.90 per year — that's more than many neighbouring boroughs charge for the same band. Here's what every band costs this year and the legitimate ways to bring your bill down.

2026/27 Stockport Council Tax Rates by Band

These figures include the Stockport Council charge plus the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) Mayoral Police and Crime Commissioner precept and GMCA General (Fire and Rescue) precept:

Band Annual Charge Weekly Equivalent Annual Increase
A £1,745.93 £33.48 +£95.72
B £2,036.92 £39.07 +£111.69
C £2,327.91 £44.64 +£127.64
D £2,618.90 £50.23 +£143.59
E £3,200.88 £61.39 +£175.50
F £3,782.85 £72.55 +£207.41
G £4,364.83 £83.71 +£239.31
H £5,237.80 £100.46 +£287.18

Your band is based on the estimated value of your property on 1 April 1991. Band A covers properties valued up to £40,000, Band D covers £68,001 to £88,000, and Band H covers properties over £320,000 — all at 1991 prices.

Every Legal Way to Reduce Your Stockport Council Tax

1. Council Tax Support (Low-Income Reduction)

If your household savings and capital do not exceed £8,000 and your income is low enough, Stockport's working-age Local Council Tax Support scheme can reduce your bill by up to 100% of the Band A or Band B rate. The scheme is means-tested with a 20% taper on income above your applicable amount. Apply online at stockport.gov.uk.

2. Single Person Discount (25% Off)

Only one countable adult in the property? You get 25% off your bill automatically once you apply. In Band D, that's £654.73 per year. Certain people don't count as adults — full-time students, people with severe mental impairment, live-in carers meeting specific criteria.

3. Disabled Persons Relief

If your property has been adapted for a disabled resident (extra room, accessible bathroom, wheelchair space), the council can reduce your band by one level. Band D drops to the Band C rate. Band A properties get a fixed reduction instead. This isn't means-tested and applies regardless of income.

4. Severe Mental Impairment Disregard

A resident with a certified severe mental impairment who receives a qualifying benefit can be disregarded entirely for Council Tax purposes. If they're the only other adult, the remaining resident gets the Single Person Discount. If they live alone, the property can be fully exempt.

5. Carer Disregard

A live-in carer providing 35+ hours weekly of care to someone receiving a qualifying disability benefit (not their spouse or partner) is disregarded. This can trigger the Single Person Discount for the person they care for.

6. Student Exemption

If everyone in the household is a full-time student, the property is completely exempt from Council Tax. Mixed households of students and non-students don't qualify for exemption, but the students are disregarded for the Single Person Discount calculation.

7. Band Challenge

If you believe your property is in the wrong band, you can challenge it through the Valuation Office Agency — completely free. But be aware: the VOA can move your band up as well as down. This makes sense only if you have genuine evidence your property is over-banded (comparable properties nearby in a lower band, structural differences).

8. Section 13A Hardship Relief

If you face exceptional financial circumstances, Stockport Council has discretionary power to reduce or write off your Council Tax under Section 13A(1)(c). Applications go through the council's "financial support in a crisis" pages. There's a strict 2-week evidence deadline.

What Your Bill Actually Pays For

Your Council Tax bill includes the Stockport Council charge and two Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) precepts:

  • Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council — the majority of the bill, covering local services, social care, education, waste collection, and road maintenance
  • GMCA Mayoral Police and Crime Commissioner precept — for Greater Manchester Police
  • GMCA General precept — for fire and rescue services

Your annual demand notice breaks down the split between the council charge and the GMCA precepts.
