How Much Council Tax Reduction Can You Get in Milton Keynes?
The 80% Cap and the 20% Minimum Payment
Standard working-age residents in Milton Keynes can receive a maximum Council Tax Reduction of 80% of their bill. If you are outside the protected categories, that means even if your income and savings are very low, you still owe at least 20% of the annual charge.
On a Band C property in Milton Keynes, that 20% minimum translates to several hundred pounds a year. The exact figure depends on your property's band and the annual Council Tax rate set each April.
This cap applies to standard working-age claimants. A separate group of protected residents can receive up to 100%, paying nothing at all.
How the Council Calculates Your Award
Milton Keynes uses a traditional means-tested model. The calculation runs through three steps:
Step 1 — work out your net weekly income. The council takes your gross earnings, benefits, and other income, then subtracts statutory disregards. Earned income disregards range from £5 per week (single person) to £25 (lone parent), with higher allowances for disability. Childcare costs are disregarded up to £175 for one child or £300 for two or more. Some benefits are fully disregarded: PIP, DLA, Attendance Allowance, Child Benefit, and War Pensions.
Step 2 — compare income to your Applicable Amount. The Applicable Amount is a statutory benchmark based on your household: single adult, couple, lone parent, number of dependent children, plus any disability or carer premiums. If your net income is at or below this figure, you receive your maximum award — 80% for standard working-age claimants or up to 100% if you are in a protected category.
Step 3 — apply the taper. If your income exceeds the Applicable Amount, the council reduces your award by 20p for every £1 of excess. So £50 a week over the threshold cuts your award by £10 a week.
Who Gets 100% Reduction
Four protected categories receive the full 100% award:
- War Pension recipients
- Care leavers under 25
- Residents whose clinician certifies that death within 12 months is not unlikely (SR1 form required)
- Residents with a severe mental health condition that impairs their ability to manage finances, provided they do not have a cohabiting partner or appointed attorney/carer handling their finances (verified by the Mental Health Evidence Form 2026)
If you or your partner falls into one of these groups, your maximum award rises to 100% and the 20% minimum does not apply.

Non-Dependant Deductions
If another adult lives in your home — an adult child, a relative, a friend — the council applies a weekly deduction based on that person's income. This reduces your CTR award even if the non-dependant does not contribute to the bill.
The deduction is waived entirely if you or your partner receives the Daily Living component of PIP, the Care component of DLA, or Attendance Allowance, or if you are registered blind.
Spreading the Remaining Bill
After CTR is applied, you can request that your remaining balance be spread over 12 monthly instalments instead of the default 10. This lowers each monthly payment, though the total stays the same. The request must be made early in the billing year.
