How to Apply for Council Tax Reduction in North Northamptonshire
The Application Route
Council Tax Reduction in North Northamptonshire is a separate, local claim that you submit directly to North Northamptonshire Council. This is the single biggest point of confusion: applying for Universal Credit at the DWP does not register a CTR claim. If you don't apply directly to NNC, you'll build up council tax arrears while assuming you're covered.
The official application is online at northnorthants.gov.uk, under the Benefits section. You'll create an account, complete the form with details about your household, income, benefits, and capital, then upload your supporting documents.
Documents You'll Need Before Starting
Gather everything before you open the application. If you submit an incomplete form and fail to provide the missing evidence within one month, NNC can reject the claim outright — and you'd have to start again from scratch.
Identity and National Insurance:
- Passport, UK driving licence, or birth certificate
- Official DWP letter confirming your National Insurance number
- Same documents for your partner if you live together
Income evidence:
- 5 consecutive weekly wage slips, 3 fortnightly slips, or 2 monthly slips
- If self-employed: audited accounts or a 3-month cashbook ledger
- Latest Universal Credit monthly statement (full breakdown, not just the payment amount)
Capital and savings:
- 2 full, consecutive, recent months of statements for every bank account, ISA, and investment account you hold
- This means current accounts, savings accounts, premium bonds — all of them
Council tax liability:
- Your current NNC council tax demand notice or tenancy agreement showing your name and liability
If You Can't Apply Online
Not everyone can navigate the digital portal. Call NNC Customer Services on 0300 126 3000 to request a paper form or ask for assisted digital support. You can also visit an NNC service centre in person at Kettering (Sheerness House, Meadow Road), Corby, Wellingborough, or Thrapston.

When Does Your Claim Start?
Your entitlement begins on the Monday following the date NNC receives your application. Two important exceptions:
- First contact rule — if you phone or visit NNC to say you intend to claim, and then submit the full application within one month, your claim date is backdated to that first contact
- New move — if you've just moved into a North Northamptonshire property and apply within one month of becoming liable, entitlement starts from the date liability began
Both rules reward acting quickly. The longer you wait to formalise the claim, the more weeks of support you lose.
Processing Time
NNC targets 14 to 28 calendar days from receiving a complete claim with all evidence. "Complete" is the operative word — missing documents trigger a written request with a one-month deadline, and the clock doesn't really start until everything is in.
Once approved, the award is credited directly to your council tax account. You won't receive cash. Instead, NNC issues a revised demand notice showing the reduced balance split into adjusted monthly instalments.
Common Mistakes That Delay Claims
Submitting without all bank statements. Two months, all accounts — including ones you barely use. NNC cross-references DWP data and can spot missing accounts.
Assuming UC covers council tax. It doesn't. Universal Credit Housing Costs cover rent only. Council tax is entirely separate and requires this direct NNC application.
Not logging the submission timestamp. If no automated confirmation arrives within 48 hours, call 0300 126 3000 to confirm receipt. Without proof of submission, you can't dispute a delayed start date.
Waiting to gather "perfect" documents. Apply with what you have and upload the rest promptly. The claim date is set by when NNC receives the application, not when you send the last document.
