How to Apply for Council Tax Reduction in West Northamptonshire

Before You Start

Applying for Council Tax Reduction in West Northamptonshire is not automatic — you need to submit a separate claim directly to West Northamptonshire Council, even if you already receive Universal Credit or other DWP benefits. The council uses its own online eClaim system, and no other process creates a valid claim.

If you're also applying for Housing Benefit (for temporary accommodation or specified supported housing), WNC uses a combined online form that covers both.

Step 1: Gather Your Documents

Before opening the eClaim form, have these ready:

  • Identity proof (original passport, UK photocard driving licence, or birth certificate) for you and your partner
  • National Insurance number (shown on a DWP letter, P60 or payslip)
  • Income evidence — five weekly payslips, three fortnightly payslips, or two monthly payslips; self-employed residents need profit and loss accounts or tax returns; UC claimants need a full screenshot of their UC award statement showing all elements
  • Bank statements for every account you hold (current, savings, ISA), covering the last two consecutive months, if your combined capital exceeds £850
  • Council Tax account number from your WNC demand notice

Step 2: Complete the eClaim Form Online

Go to westnorthants.gov.uk and navigate to "Apply for Council Tax Reduction." The form collects your household details, income, savings and housing costs.

If you cannot use the online form, call WNC to request a paper application. The council must provide accessible alternatives.

Step 3: Upload Your Evidence

Once the form is submitted, you have 21 days to upload all supporting documents through the portal. Missing this deadline can result in your application being cancelled, and you would need to start again — losing your original claim date.

Step 4: Protect Your Claim Start Date

Your claim starts from the Monday following the date WNC receives your completed form. If you contact the council first to declare your intention to claim, you have one calendar month to complete the actual eClaim — this protects the earlier contact date.

This matters because a later backdating request for a working-age claim requires continuous good cause throughout the period. File the eClaim as soon as possible, even if you're still gathering documents.

Step 5: Wait — and Don't Resubmit

As of October 2026, WNC is processing claims submitted from 15 August 2026 — roughly an 8–9 week backlog. If you submitted after that date, the council's advice is not to call or resubmit. Duplicate applications create confusion and slow processing further.

When your claim is decided, WNC sends a written decision notice and a revised Council Tax demand notice with adjusted monthly instalments. Keep both documents — you'll need the decision notice if you want to challenge the award.

What Happens After

If you're awarded Council Tax Reduction, your monthly payments drop automatically. Any support owed for the period between your claim date and the decision date is applied as a credit to your account.

If your claim is refused or the award is lower than expected, you can lodge a written grievance within one month of the decision. The West Northamptonshire Council Tax Reduction guide walks through the full evidence preparation, application and challenge process step by step.
