Council Tax Reduction Calculator: How Much Will You Get in North Northamptonshire?
North Northamptonshire Council doesn't publish a council tax reduction calculator on its website. But the formula the council uses is straightforward once you understand the steps, and you can work out a reasonable estimate with a pen and your latest income figures.
The Calculation in Four Steps
Step 1 — Find your net council tax liability. Start with your property's annual council tax charge for 2026/27 (Band D is £1,918.23 in North Northamptonshire). If you qualify for the 25% Single Person Discount, subtract that first. The result is your net liability.
Step 2 — Apply the 75% cap. North Northamptonshire's standard working-age scheme caps council tax reduction at 75% of your net liability. Multiply your net figure by 0.75. This is the maximum you could receive — regardless of how low your income is, you'll normally pay at least the remaining 25%, unless a further discretionary reduction applies.
Step 3 — Run the means test. Compare your household's net weekly income against your applicable amount (the government's baseline figure for your household type — single person £90.50/week, couple higher, with additions for children and disability premiums). If your income is at or below the applicable amount, you get the full 75% award. If it's above, the council applies a 20% taper: for every £1 of excess income, your weekly award drops by 20p.
Step 4 — Subtract non-dependant deductions. If other adults live in your home (not your partner), a fixed weekly deduction is taken from your award based on their income. The exception: if you or your partner receives PIP daily living component or Attendance Allowance, non-dependant deductions are waived entirely.
A Worked Example
A single person in a Band B property (£1,491.96/year) with the Single Person Discount pays £1,118.97/year net (£21.52/week). The 75% cap gives a maximum weekly award of £16.14. If their net income is £120/week with a £5 earnings disregard, their assessed income is £115. Excess over the £90.50 applicable amount: £24.50. The 20% taper takes £4.90/week off the award. Final weekly CTR: £11.24 — leaving them paying about £10.28/week.
If that same person had income at or below £90.50/week (for example, they're on Income Support or income-based ESA), they'd receive the full £16.14/week award and pay only the 25% minimum of £5.38/week.
Free Online Calculators
While NNC doesn't offer its own tool, national benefit calculators give you a ballpark:
Turn2us (turn2us.org.uk) and entitledto (entitledto.co.uk) both run council tax reduction estimates. Enter your postcode, income, household details, and savings. Their generalized estimates may not capture North Northamptonshire's local scheme parameters, so use them as a rough check rather than a decision on entitlement.
Remember that these calculators rely on the data you enter. They can't verify your figures or submit an application. The actual award comes from NNC's assessment after you apply.

Why Your Award Might Differ From the Estimate
Three common reasons your actual award doesn't match what you calculated:
Capital between £6,000 and £16,000 adds "tariff income" — £1/week for every £250 (or part) above £6,000. This increases your assessed income even if your bank balance hasn't changed.
Universal Credit claimants see monthly fluctuations because UC is recalculated every assessment period based on real-time earnings data. Your council tax reduction shifts with it, so the figure you calculated for one month may not hold for the next.
The council excludes certain income (child benefit, PIP, DLA, Attendance Allowance) and applies specific earnings disregards. If you included those in your estimate, your figure will be lower than the actual award.
The North Northamptonshire Council Tax Reduction guide includes a step-by-step award estimator worksheet that walks through the full calculation using your own numbers, so you know what to expect before you apply.
