Council Tax Bands and Rates in North Northamptonshire 2026/27

The 2026/27 Rates

North Northamptonshire Council set a Band D rate of £1,918.23 for 2026/27 — a 4.99% increase over the previous year (£91.17 more than 2025/26's £1,827.06). That 4.99% breaks down as a 2.99% core council tax increase plus a 2.00% Adult Social Care precept.

All other bands are calculated as a proportion of Band D:

Band Proportion of Band D Annual Charge (before parish)
A 6/9 £1,278.82
B 7/9 £1,491.96
C 8/9 £1,705.09
D 9/9 £1,918.23
E 11/9 £2,344.50
F 13/9 £2,770.78
G 15/9 £3,197.05
H 18/9 £3,836.46

These figures are before parish precepts, which vary by area and are added on top. Your actual bill may be slightly higher depending on which parish you live in.

Why Your Band Matters for CTR

Council Tax Reduction is calculated as a percentage of your net council tax liability. Since your band determines the starting liability, it directly affects both the maximum CTR you can receive under the standard working-age scheme and the 25% share of liability that scheme leaves payable.

For a working-age claimant on maximum CTR (75%):

Band Annual Bill Maximum CTR (75%) Minimum Payment (25%)
A £1,278.82 £959.12 £319.71
B £1,491.96 £1,118.97 £372.99
C £1,705.09 £1,278.82 £426.27
D £1,918.23 £1,438.67 £479.56

If you also have the 25% Single Person Discount, the figures drop further — CTR and the minimum payment are both calculated on 75% of the gross bill.

How Bands Are Set

Your property's council tax band is based on its estimated open market value as of 1 April 1991. The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) — not NNC — assigns bands:

Band 1991 Value
A Up to £40,000
B £40,001 – £52,000
C £52,001 – £68,000
D £68,001 – £88,000
E £88,001 – £120,000
F £120,001 – £160,000
G £160,001 – £320,000
H Over £320,000

Yes, these are 1991 prices, not current values. A house worth £250,000 today might be Band C or D depending on what it would have sold for in 1991.

Challenging Your Band

If you believe your property is in the wrong band, you can challenge it through the Valuation Office Agency — this is completely free. The VOA reviews whether the 1991 valuation was correct.

A successful band reduction lowers your council tax and, if you're on CTR, reduces your 25% minimum payment. However, be aware that band challenges can also result in your band going up if the VOA decides the property was undervalued.

Band challenges go through the VOA, not NNC — they're a completely separate process from Council Tax Reduction.

The Disabled Band Reduction

If your home has adaptations essential for a disabled resident's needs (wheelchair space, an extra bathroom, an extra room for medical equipment), you may qualify for a Disabled Band Reduction. This drops your bill by one band — a Band C property pays Band B rates, for example. Band A properties drop to a special Band A(D) rate below the standard minimum.

This is applied before CTR is calculated, reducing both the maximum award and the minimum payment.

The Annual Increase Problem

The 4.99% increase for 2026/27 highlights a structural issue for working-age CTR claimants. When the council tax rate rises, the 25% minimum payment rises with it — but most claimants' incomes don't keep pace. A £91.17 increase on Band D means the minimum annual payment went up by about £22.79.

Over several years of consecutive increases, the cumulative effect is significant for households on fixed or near-fixed incomes.
