West Northamptonshire Council Tax Bands 2026 to 2027
How Council Tax Bands Work in West Northamptonshire
Every residential property in West Northamptonshire sits in one of eight bands (A through H) based on its estimated value on 1 April 1991. The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) — not the council — sets the band. WNC then charges each band a proportion of the Band D rate, with Band A paying roughly two-thirds of Band D and Band H paying twice as much.
For 2026/27, WNC approved a 4.95% increase to the main Council Tax charge (shown as 5.0% on demand bills, reflecting rounding) on 26 February 2026. The average Band D bill across West Northamptonshire, including parish precepts, stands at approximately £2,487 per year — about £95 above the English national average of £2,392.
Approximate Annual Charges by Band (2026/27)
These figures are indicative and include the main WNC charge plus typical parish/precept amounts. Your actual bill depends on your specific parish:
| Band | Property value (1991) | Approximate annual charge |
|---|---|---|
| A | Up to £40,000 | ~£1,658 |
| B | £40,001–£52,000 | ~£1,934 |
| C | £52,001–£68,000 | ~£2,210 |
| D | £68,001–£88,000 | ~£2,487 |
| E | £88,001–£120,000 | ~£3,040 |
| F | £120,001–£160,000 | ~£3,593 |
| G | £160,001–£320,000 | ~£4,145 |
| H | Over £320,000 | ~£4,974 |
Your demand bill (posted each March) shows the exact breakdown: the WNC share, the police precept, the fire precept, and any parish or town council charge.
Why Your Band Matters for Council Tax Reduction
Council Tax Reduction is calculated against your net liability — the bill that remains after statutory discounts like the 25% Single Person Discount. A higher band means a higher net liability, which means the 20% minimum payment that all working-age claimants must cover is also higher in absolute terms.
For example, a single person in Band A with a net annual liability of roughly £1,244 pays a minimum of about £249 per year even with maximum CTR. The same person in Band D faces a minimum of roughly £373. The band sets the floor of what you will owe regardless of how low your income is.

Checking and Challenging Your Band
You can check your property's band for free on the VOA website at gov.uk/council-tax-bands. Enter your postcode and find your property in the list.
If you believe your band is wrong — perhaps comparable neighbouring properties are in a lower band, or your property has changed significantly (a demolition, fire damage, or conversion into flats) — you can challenge it directly with the VOA at no cost. The process is entirely free and you do not need to pay a commercial agency to do it for you.
Be aware that a band challenge can go either way. The VOA can increase your band if their review finds your property was undervalued, which would permanently raise your bill. This risk is real and commercial band-challenge agencies sometimes downplay it.
Bands After the Unitary Merger
West Northamptonshire Council was created on 1 April 2021 by merging Daventry District Council, Northampton Borough Council, and South Northamptonshire Council. All three predecessor areas now fall under WNC, but the total Council Tax bill can still vary by parish and local precepts. The VOA bands themselves did not change — your 1991 valuation stayed the same regardless of the administrative restructure.
If you lived in one of the legacy areas and your bill changed at the merger, that was due to the new combined council's precept structure, not a revaluation.
Reducing Your Bill Within Your Band
If your band is correct but the bill is still unaffordable, the route is through discounts and reductions applied to that band's charge:
- Single Person Discount (25%) if you are the only counted adult in the property
- Council Tax Reduction (up to 80% for working-age claimants) through WNC's means-tested LCTRS scheme
- Disabled Band Reduction if the property meets the disability-related property conditions — effectively charges you at one band lower
- Severe Mental Impairment exemption if everyone in the property qualifies
Our West Northamptonshire Council Tax Reduction guide covers how each of these reductions interacts with your band and includes worked calculations showing the actual annual bill at different band levels.
