Bradford Council Tax Bands 2026: Rates, Charges and How Your Band Affects CTR
Your council tax band sets your annual bill in Bradford — and it directly affects how much help you can get through Council Tax Reduction. For 2026/27, Bradford Council approved a 4.99% increase (2.99% core plus 2% adult social care precept), bringing its Band D baseline to £2,333.05 per year before parish or town precepts.
Bradford Council Tax Charges 2026/27
Every property in the Bradford district sits in one of eight valuation bands (A through H), set by the Valuation Office Agency based on what the property would have sold for on 1 April 1991. About 41% of Bradford properties fall in Band A — the lowest tier.
The annual charges for 2026/27 vary by parish and precepting authority, but the district-wide baseline runs roughly:
- Band A: ~£1,555 per year
- Band B: ~£1,814
- Band C: ~£2,074
- Band D: ~£2,333 (the reference band)
- Bands E–H: progressively higher
Your exact charge depends on your parish precept. The figure appears on the council tax demand notice sent each March.
Why Your Band Matters for CTR
Bradford's working-age Council Tax Reduction scheme caps awards at 72.5% of the Band A charge. If you live in a Band A property, the maximum CTR covers 72.5% of your bill, leaving you to pay the 27.5% minimum (roughly £428 per year before any single person discount).
If your property is in Band B or above, CTR is still calculated on the Band A figure. You pay the 27.5% Band A minimum plus 100% of the gap between Band A and your actual band. A Band C property, for example, means paying the Band A minimum (~£428) plus the full Band C excess (~£519), totalling around £947 per year even at maximum CTR.
This Band A cap is a local policy choice — not a national rule. Some councils cap at Band B or offer higher percentages. Bradford set 72.5% for 2026/27, up from 70% the previous year.
Checking and Challenging Your Band
Your band is printed on your council tax bill. You can also look it up on the VOA website (gov.uk/council-tax-bands) using your postcode.
If you believe your property is in the wrong band — perhaps a neighbouring identical property sits lower — you can challenge it directly with the VOA. This is free. You do not need a claims company, and you should be cautious of firms that charge a percentage of any refund: the same challenge submitted directly costs nothing.
Bear in mind that a band challenge can result in your band going up, not just down. The VOA reassesses the property independently.
