Bradford Council Tax Reduction Calculator: How Much Will You Get?

Bradford does not publish a self-service CTR calculator, but the means test formula is public — and once you understand it, you can estimate your own award with reasonable accuracy. The key numbers for 2026/27: maximum award is 72.5% of the Band A charge, and every working-age household pays at least 27.5%.

The Core Formula

Bradford's working-age Council Tax Reduction uses a traditional means test. Your award depends on three things: the Band A council tax charge, your weekly income versus your "applicable amount," and any non-dependant deductions.

Step 1 — Find Your Capped Liability

Regardless of your actual band, CTR is calculated on the Band A charge. For 2026/27, the Band A charge is approximately £1,555 per year (£29.83/week). If you qualify for a 25% single person discount, the net Band A figure drops to about £1,167 per year (£22.37/week).

Step 2 — Apply the 72.5% Cap

The maximum CTR is 72.5% of that net Band A figure. With a single person discount, that is roughly £846 per year (£16.22/week). Without the discount, it is about £1,128 per year.

Step 3 — Run the Income Taper

If your weekly income (after disregards) sits at or below your applicable amount, you receive the full maximum award. If it exceeds the applicable amount, the council deducts 20% of the excess from your maximum award.

Standard earnings disregards:

  • Single person: £5/week
  • Couple: £10/week
  • Lone parent: £25/week
  • Disability or carer qualifying: £20/week

The applicable amount is set nationally and varies by household structure — a single adult's baseline is around £90/week, while a couple with children will be higher due to family and disability premiums.

Step 4 — Subtract Non-Dependant Deductions

If an adult aged 18+ lives with you (and is not your partner or a lodger), a fixed weekly deduction applies based on their gross income. These deductions are waived entirely if you or your partner receive PIP Daily Living, DLA Care (middle or highest rate), or Attendance Allowance.

A Worked Example

A single adult in a Band A property earning £110/week net, with a single person discount:

  • Net Band A liability: £1,167/year
  • Maximum CTR (72.5%): £846/year
  • Assessed income: £110 − £5 disregard = £105/week
  • Applicable amount: ~£90.50/week
  • Excess: £14.50/week → 20% taper = £2.90/week (£151/year)
  • CTR award: £846 − £151 = £695/year
  • You pay: £1,167 − £695 = £472/year (~£39/month)

What If You Are in a Higher Band?

Your CTR is still only calculated on the Band A figure. If you live in a Band C property (about £2,074/year gross) and receive the 25% single person discount, you pay:

  • The 27.5% Band A minimum (about £321 after the discount)
  • Plus the remaining Band C charge above the Band A base (about £389 after the same discount)
  • Total: roughly £710/year, even at maximum CTR

Without the single person discount, the minimum would be about £947/year.

This is why higher-band properties always produce a larger bill, no matter how low your income is.
