How Much Council Tax Reduction Will I Get in Barnet?

The amount of Council Tax Reduction you receive in Barnet depends on three things: your income band, your property's council tax band, and your household composition. Here are the actual numbers for 2026/27.

The Income Band Discounts

Barnet's working-age scheme assigns a fixed percentage discount based on your net monthly earnings:

Net Monthly Earnings Discount
No earnings / unemployed 70%
Up to £500 50%
£500.01 – £800 40%
£800.01 – £1,400 25%
£1,400.01 – £2,000 12%
Over £2,000 0%

These percentages are applied to your eligible council tax liability — not necessarily your full bill, because of the Band C cap (explained below).

The Band C Cap Reduces Higher-Band Awards

For properties in Bands D through H, Barnet calculates your CTR as if the property were in Band C (£1,895.64 per year). You then pay 100% of the difference between your actual band and Band C yourself, on top of whatever minimum payment your income band requires.

For properties in Bands A, B, or C, the cap does not apply — your full bill is used for the calculation.

Three Worked Examples

Single unemployed person in a Band B flat. Annual bill: £1,658.69. With the 25% single person discount: £1,244.02. Band B is below Band C, so the full £1,244.02 is eligible. At Band 1 (70% discount): CTR = £870.81. You pay £373.21 per year — about £31 per month.

Couple on Universal Credit earning £750/month in a Band D house. Annual bill: £2,132.60. Band D is above the cap, so eligible liability is the Band C amount: £1,895.64. At Band 3 (40% discount, since £750 falls in the £500.01–£800 range): CTR on Band C = £758.26. But you also pay the full Band D minus Band C gap (£2,132.60 – £1,895.64 = £236.96). Total you pay: £1,137.38 + £236.96 = £1,374.34 per year — about £114.53 per month.

Lone parent earning £450/month in a Band C property with an adult child earning £250/week. Annual bill: £1,895.64 (no single person discount because two adults live there). At Band 2 (50% discount): gross CTR = £947.82. But the adult child is a non-dependant earning over £200/week, triggering an £11/week deduction (£572/year). Net CTR = £947.82 – £572 = £375.82. You pay £1,519.82 per year — about £126.65 per month.

Pension-Age Residents Get More

If you or your partner have reached state pension age, you may qualify for up to 100% of your actual bill. The pension-age scheme uses a national means-tested calculation with no Band C cap and a £16,000 capital limit (compared to £6,000 for working age). A Pension Credit claim does not trigger an automatic Barnet CTR award; apply separately so Barnet can assess your entitlement.

When the Standard Award Is Not Enough

If your remaining bill is still unaffordable after CTR, Barnet operates a Council Tax Discretionary Relief (CTDR) fund — a separate hardship application that can reduce or cancel the balance. You must have already claimed all standard reductions before applying.
