Barnet Council Tax Reduction Calculator

Barnet links to a benefits calculator to help you check whether you may qualify for Council Tax Reduction. Generic national tools like Turn2us and entitledto may not capture every local rule. If you want to estimate your award yourself, you can work through the calculation below — and it's more straightforward than the policy documents make it look.

The Four-Step Calculation

Step 1: Find Your Eligible Liability

Start with your annual Council Tax bill. If you get the 25% Single Person Discount, apply that first.

Then check your property band. If you're in Band A, B, or C, your eligible liability is your full bill (after the SPD). If you're in Band D or above, your eligible liability is capped at the Band C charge: £1,895.64 for 2026/27. You pay 100% of the difference between your actual band and Band C on top of whatever CTR covers.

Step 2: Find Your Income Band

Look at your household's combined net monthly earnings:

Net Monthly Earnings Discount %
£0 (unemployed) 70%
Up to £500 50%
£500.01–£800 40%
£800.01–£1,400 25%
£1,400.01–£2,000 12%
Over £2,000 0%

Step 3: Subtract Non-Dependant Deductions

If a non-dependant (someone over 18 who is not your partner) lives in your home, Barnet deducts a weekly amount from your award:

  • Non-dependant earning under £200/week: £5.00/week deducted (£260/year)
  • Non-dependant earning £200+/week: £11.00/week deducted (£572/year)
  • No deduction if you receive PIP Daily Living, DLA Care at the middle or high rate, or the Carer Premium

Each non-dependant generates a separate deduction.

Step 4: Calculate

Annual CTR = (Eligible Liability × Discount %) minus (Non-dependant deductions × 52)

If the result is negative, your award is zero.

Worked Example: Couple on UC in a Band E Property

  • Band E annual bill: £2,606.51
  • Eligible liability capped at Band C: £1,895.64
  • Combined net monthly earnings from UC: £700 → Band 3 (40%)
  • No non-dependants
  • CTR award: 40% × £1,895.64 = £758.26 per year
  • They still owe: £2,606.51 − £758.26 = £1,848.25 per year (about £154/month)

The £1,848.25 breaks down as £710.87 (the Band E-to-Band C excess) plus £1,137.38 (60% of the Band C charge).

Why Generic Calculators Get It Wrong

National benefit calculators typically model council tax support using the old percentage-taper method or a different council's rules. Barnet's scheme is locally designed with specific features they don't capture:

  • The hard £6,000 capital cutoff (no tariff income)
  • The Band C cap on eligible liability
  • The exact six earnings bands with their cliff-edge thresholds
  • Barnet's specific non-dependant deduction rates
  • The London Living Wage minimum income floor for self-employed claimants
