Wandsworth Council Tax Rates and Bands 2026-2027

The 2026/27 Rates by Band

Wandsworth's council tax charges for 2026/27, including the borough precept, GLA precept, and adult social care precept:

Band Annual charge 10-month instalment 12-month instalment
A £680.23 £68.02 £56.69
B £793.60 £79.36 £66.13
C £906.98 £90.70 £75.58
D £1,020.35 £102.04 £85.03
E £1,247.10 £124.71 £103.93
F £1,473.84 £147.38 £122.82
G £1,700.58 £170.06 £141.72
H £2,040.70 £204.07 £170.06

By default you pay over 10 monthly instalments (April to January). You can request 12-month instalments through the council — this spreads the cost more evenly but does not reduce the total.

Why Wandsworth's Bills May Rise 94% in 2027/28

The 94% increase is a proposal for 2027/28, not a rise that has already taken effect. Wandsworth's overall Band D charge was £990.07 in 2025/26 and is £1,020.35 in 2026/27. The council says that, if the Government does not rethink its funding cuts, Band D may need to rise by £958 to £1,978 in 2027/28.

Wandsworth has historically had low Council Tax rates relative to London and national averages. The council says Government funding is set to fall by £84 million a year by 2029; if the funding settlement is not changed, the proposed 2027/28 increase would address that gap and other budget pressures. The final 2027/28 tax level is due to be determined through the council's budget process in February 2027 and is subject to full council agreement in early March.

The 2026/27 rates shown above remain below rates in many other London boroughs. Any 2027/28 increase is still subject to the council's formal decision-making process.

How Bands Are Decided

Council tax bands are set by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), not by Wandsworth Council. Every residential property in England sits in a band from A (lowest value) to H (highest), based on what the property would have sold for on 1 April 1991.

If you believe your band is wrong — your property is valued higher than similar neighbouring properties, or structural changes have reduced its value — you can challenge the band directly with the VOA at no cost through gov.uk. This is separate from Council Tax Reduction and does not involve the council.

A successful band reduction lowers your base bill permanently. For example, moving from Band D (£1,020.35) to Band C (£906.98) saves £113.37 every year.

The Proposed 2027 Changes

In October 2026, Wandsworth published a public consultation on further changes to the Council Tax Reduction scheme for 2027/28. The key proposals:

  • Removing the 100% discount for working-age claimants — meaning everyone would pay at least something toward their council tax
  • Expanding income bands to cover more low earners who are currently excluded from the scheme
  • Increasing total CTR spending from £6.9 million to £12.4 million in 2027/28, then tapering back to £7.1 million by 2030/31

These are proposals under consultation, not law. The 2026/27 scheme remains in full force until at least March 2027, and claims for that year are assessed under its operative rules.

What This Means for Your Bill

If you are on a low income, receiving Universal Credit, or claiming disability benefits, Council Tax Reduction can cut between 75% and 100% off these charges. A Scheme 2 claimant (90% reduction) in a Band D property pays roughly £102 a year instead of £1,020.35.

The Wandsworth Council Tax Reduction guide covers exactly which scheme level applies to your household, with worked examples at every band showing the actual pound amount you would pay after CTR.
