Wakefield Council Tax Rates and Bands 2026/27

2026/27 Rates by Band

Wakefield Council approved a 4.99% total increase for 2026/27, split between a 2.99% general council tax rise and a 2.00% Adult Social Care precept. The Band D baseline (Wakefield Council's share, before parish precepts, police, and fire authority charges) is approximately £1,892 per year.

Each valuation band is expressed as a fraction of Band D:

Band Fraction of Band D Approximate annual charge
A 6/9 £1,261
B 7/9 £1,471
C 8/9 £1,681
D 9/9 £1,892
E 11/9 £2,312
F 13/9 £2,732
G 15/9 £3,153
H 18/9 £3,783

These figures are the Wakefield Council element only. Your actual bill includes precepts from the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority, and your parish council (if applicable). The parish precept varies across the district — properties in Pontefract, Castleford, Normanton, Featherstone, and Hemsworth each have different parish charges that add to the base amount.

What Your Bill Includes

Your annual council tax demand notice breaks the charge into its components. The Wakefield Council share covers adult social care, children's services, highways, waste collection, planning, and other district-level services. The police and fire precepts are set by their respective authorities and appear as separate lines.

The bill is usually payable in 10 monthly instalments from April to January, though you can request 12-month instalments by contacting the council. If you move mid-year, your bill is recalculated from the date liability starts or ends at each property.

Which Band Is Your Property In?

Your valuation band is based on what the property would have sold for on 1 April 1991. This sounds archaic — and it is — but it's the system every English council uses. The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) assigns and maintains the bands. You can check your property's band for free at gov.uk/council-tax-bands.

If you believe your band is wrong — for example, because similar properties nearby are in a lower band — you can challenge it through the VOA. The challenge is free and can be done online. If the VOA agrees, your band is reduced and your bill is recalculated (and you may get a backdated refund). If they disagree, your band stays unless you appeal to the Valuation Tribunal.

Challenging your band is a separate process from claiming Council Tax Support. You can do both at the same time.

Reducing Your Bill

The headline rate isn't necessarily what you pay. Wakefield offers several routes to a lower bill:

Council Tax Support (CTS): the means-tested working-age scheme covers up to 70% of your council tax if your non-DWP income is £55/week or under and your capital is £6,000 or less. Even if you earn more, you may qualify for 55%, 40%, or 25% support depending on your income band.

Single person discount: a 25% reduction if you're the only adult in the property (certain residents like students and severely mentally impaired people are disregarded).

Disabled band reduction: if your home has been adapted for a disabled resident (extra bathroom, wheelchair room, extra kitchen), it can be re-banded one band lower.

Hardship fund: Wakefield allocated £200,000 for 2026/27 in discretionary Section 13A relief for residents in exceptional financial hardship.

Foster carer discount: registered Wakefield foster carers get a 70% discretionary discount.

Care leaver discount: care leavers under 25 living in Wakefield get a 100% discount.
