Tasmania Rates Remission Deadline: Key Dates for 2026/27

Tasmania's pensioner rates remission has two dates that matter more than any others. Miss the first one and you're locked out for a full year. Miss the second and your claim is dead.

Date 1: The 1 July Qualifying Date

Your concession card must be active on or before 1 July 2026 to qualify for the 2026/27 rates remission. This isn't flexible. A card issued on 2 July 2026 — even one day late — means you cannot claim the remission for the entire 2026/27 financial year.

This catches Health Care Card holders most often. If you receive a new HCC in July or August after a change in circumstances, your first eligible year is 2027/28. There's no hardship exception for the one-day gap.

The date the council checks is the issue date printed on your card (or the start date in Services Australia's system), not the date you received it in the mail.

Date 2: The 31 March 2027 Cutoff

All current-year applications must reach your local council by 31 March 2027. If 31 March falls on a weekend or public holiday, electronic submissions or submissions at a customer service centre on the next business day are accepted.

Timeliness is determined by the date the council receives the application, not the mailing date.

The Retrospective Claim Deadline

The same 31 March 2027 date also applies to retrospective claims for the 2025/26 year. If you were eligible last year but didn't lodge, you can backdate — but only up to that date.

What If You Just Got Your Card

If your card was issued after 1 July 2026, your first step is to apply for the TasWater concession immediately. Unlike the council scheme, TasWater has no fixed qualifying date — concessions are applied pro-rata from the day after your application is received. Every day you delay is money lost.

Then mark your calendar: you become eligible for the council rates remission starting 1 July 2027, with applications opening on that date.
