Tasmania Pensioner Rates Remission: How Much Do You Get in 2026/27?
Every eligible pensioner in Tasmania gets a 30% discount on council rates, but the actual dollar amount depends on your rates bill and whether you're connected to TasWater. Here are the exact numbers for 2026/27.
The Formula
The remission equals 30% of your eligible rates (general rates, general municipal charges, waste charges, and stormwater levies), capped at a statutory maximum that Treasury indexes each year.
For 2026/27:
| Your situation | Maximum cap |
|---|---|
| Connected to TasWater | $401 |
| Not connected to TasWater | $591 |
TasWater customers get a lower council cap because they receive a separate water and sewerage concession (up to $249.43) directly from TasWater. Non-TasWater customers — typically rural properties with tanks and septic — get the higher council cap to compensate.
On top of the general remission, you also receive a 20% rebate on the State Fire Commission levy on your rates notice. This is calculated separately and is not subject to the cap.
Worked Example 1: Below the Cap
A pensioner in Launceston has a general rate of $1,100, waste charge of $150, and fire levy of $100. The property is connected to TasWater.
- Eligible rates: $1,100 + $150 = $1,250
- 30% remission: $375
- Cap check: $375 is under the $401 TasWater cap, so the full $375 applies
- Fire levy rebate: 20% × $100 = $20
- Total council bill saving: $395
- Plus a separate TasWater concession of up to $249.43 on the water bill
Worked Example 2: Above the Cap
A pensioner in rural Circular Head has a general rate of $2,200, infrastructure charge of $300, and fire levy of $120. No TasWater connection.
- Eligible rates: $2,200 + $300 = $2,500
- 30% remission: $750
- Cap check: $750 exceeds the $591 non-TasWater cap, so the remission is capped at $591
- Fire levy rebate: 20% × $120 = $24
- Total council bill saving: $615

What Counts as "Eligible Rates"
The 30% applies to general rates, general municipal charges, waste management charges, and stormwater removal levies. It does not apply to late payment penalties, legal recovery costs, or interest charges under section 128 of the Local Government Act 1993.
How 2026/27 Compares to Last Year
The caps for 2025/26 were $385 (TasWater) and $566 (non-TasWater). If you were eligible last year but didn't claim, you can lodge a retrospective claim for the prior year at those caps — but the deadline is 31 March 2027.
