Pensioner Rates Remission Backdate Tasmania: Claiming for Last Year
If you held a valid concession card on 1 July 2025 but never lodged a rates remission application for the 2025/26 year, Tasmanian law lets you claim it now — but only if you move before the deadline.
The One-Year Lookback Rule
The State Revenue Office allows retrospective claims for exactly one prior financial year. No further back. For the 2025/26 year, the prior-year caps were:
- $385 if the property was connected to TasWater
- $566 if the property was not connected to TasWater
You also get the 20% fire levy rebate for the prior year.
The Deadline
The absolute cut-off for a 2025/26 retrospective claim is 31 March 2027 — the same deadline as current-year applications. After that date, the prior year's entitlement is gone permanently.
Timeliness is judged by the council's date-received stamp, not when you posted the form.
What You Need to Prove
A retrospective claim has two extra requirements beyond a standard application:
- Card validity on 1 July 2025 — you must show that your Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card, or endorsed DVA Gold Card was active on or before 1 July 2025
- Principal residence on 1 July 2025 — you owned and lived in the property as your main home on that date
Most councils have a specific prior-year form. Launceston, for example, uses Form 23-Fmx-011 (separate from the current-year Form 23-Fmx-014). Ask your council for the retrospective application if it's not obvious on their website.

How It's Processed
Prior-year claims go through an extra step. The council forwards your application to the State Revenue Office for individual audit and approval, rather than processing it through the standard automated data match.
Once approved, the remission is credited to your council rate account. If you've already paid the 2025/26 rates in full, you can request in writing either a refund via electronic funds transfer or a credit carried forward to your next bill.
Common Scenarios
You moved house during 2025/26: You can claim for the property you owned and lived in as of 1 July 2025, even if you've since moved. Lodge the claim with the council that covers that property.
Your card was issued partway through 2025/26: If the card's issue date is 2 July 2025 or later, you're ineligible for a 2025/26 backdated claim. But you may qualify for 2026/27 if the card was active by 1 July 2026.
You already claimed council rates but missed TasWater: TasWater does not backdate. The retrospective rule applies only to council rates remissions, not water and sewerage concessions.
