Stockport Council Tax When Moving House — What You Need to Do
Moving house in Stockport means dealing with two council tax accounts at once — closing one and opening another, often with overlapping bills, different bands, and a narrow window to transfer any discounts. Getting the timing wrong can leave you paying for a property you've already left.
Tell the Council Before You Move
Notify Stockport Council as soon as you know your moving date. You can do this through the online portal or by phone. The council needs your current address, your new address, and the exact date you're moving out.
Council tax liability is assessed separately for each property and can continue after you move out if you remain liable for the empty property. Tell the council your move dates so it can update both accounts. If you've overpaid on your old account (because instalments covered dates after your liability ended), the credit may transfer to future instalments or be refunded on request.
If you're moving within Stockport, tell the council about both addresses and confirm that both accounts have been updated. If you're moving out of the borough, contact your new council separately to register there.
Discounts Don't Transfer Automatically
This catches people out. Your Single Person Discount, Council Tax Reduction, Carer Disregard, or any other discount is tied to your old property and your circumstances at that address. When you move, notify the council and check whether a new application is required.
Council Tax Reduction does not necessarily carry over unchanged when you move. Notify the council directly and provide any claim details or evidence it requests. If you receive Universal Credit and your new address is in Stockport, send the required details to Stockport Council within six weeks of your UC claim or address change; reporting the move to DWP alone does not notify the council. If you move to another area, check that council's deadline.
Single Person Discount needs a new declaration confirming you still live alone at the new property. If another adult is moving in with you, you'll lose the 25% discount.
Disabled Band Reduction does not automatically transfer. Apply again if the new property has features essential for the disabled person's needs; the council may need to assess it.
The Gap Between Properties
If there's a gap between moving out of one property and into another — staying with family while your new place is being decorated, for instance — you may be liable for council tax on both properties during the overlap. The former Class C exemption for empty, unfurnished homes ended in 2013. Stockport may offer a short-term local discount, but there is no automatic entitlement; ask the council what applies to your property.
If your old property is empty because you're trying to sell it, or because probate is ongoing, different exemption rules apply. The key is to tell the council the property is empty and why — leaving it unreported means you'll be charged at the standard rate.

Moving Into a New-Build
New-build properties in Stockport are banded by the VOA before anyone moves in. Your first bill will reflect that banding. A VOA council tax band challenge is free. Check the VOA's current guidance to see whether you can make a formal proposal and the deadline that applies to your circumstances.
Protecting Your Reduction When You Move
If you're currently receiving Council Tax Reduction in Stockport, report the move to the council within 21 days. For working-age claims, entitlement normally starts on the Monday after Stockport receives the official application. If the six-week Universal Credit exception applies, entitlement can align with the UC start date or the start of Council Tax liability. Notify the council directly; a DWP address update alone is not enough.
The Stockport Council Tax Reduction guide covers exactly how to time your application around a move, including the UC synchronisation steps that protect your backdating window, and a checklist of the documents your new council will need.
