South Gloucestershire Council Tax Bands 2026/27: Every Band from A to H

2026/27 Council Tax Rates

South Gloucestershire Council set its 2026/27 Band D council tax element at £2,027.71 — a 4.99% increase from the previous year. But your actual bill depends on your property band and your parish, because parish precepts vary significantly across the district.

Band D total charges (including parish precepts) range from around £2,508 in Almondsbury to over £2,665 in Dodington. Bradley Stoke sits at £2,568.29.

The standard band multipliers work as fractions of the Band D rate:

Band Fraction of Band D Approximate SGC Element
A 6/9 ~£1,352
B 7/9 ~£1,577
C 8/9 ~£1,802
D 9/9 £2,028
E 11/9 ~£2,479
F 13/9 ~£2,929
G 15/9 ~£3,380
H 18/9 ~£4,055

Parish precepts add anywhere from £80 to £200+ on top, depending on where you live. Acton Turville, for example, has a Band A total of £1,630.98 including parish charges.

How Your Band Is Set

Every property in South Gloucestershire was banded by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) based on its estimated open-market value as of 1 April 1991. The bands haven't been revalued since, so a property worth £40,001–£52,000 in 1991 sits in Band B, while one worth over £320,000 sits in Band H.

You can check your band on the VOA website at gov.uk/council-tax-bands.

Challenging Your Band

If you think your property is in the wrong band — perhaps because of a physical change, a neighbour in a comparable property pays less, or the 1991 valuation seems wrong — you can challenge it directly with the VOA at no cost. The official route through gov.uk/voa is free; you don't need to pay a private firm to do it for you.

Be aware that the VOA can adjust your band up as well as down, and any change can be backdated. A challenge is worth pursuing when you have clear evidence, but it's not risk-free.

Reducing Your Bill

Beyond the band itself, several reductions can lower what you pay:

  • Single Person Discount — 25% off if you're the only adult in the property
  • Council Tax Reduction — up to 77% off for working-age residents on low income (up to 100% for pension-age)
  • Disabled Band Reduction — bill calculated at the next lower band if your home has essential disability adaptations
  • Severe Mental Impairment disregard — the person is ignored for council tax count purposes

These stack. A single disabled person in a Band C property could get the Disabled Band Reduction (charged as Band B), the Single Person Discount (25% off), and Council Tax Reduction (up to 77% of the remaining bill).

Payment Options

South Gloucestershire bills arrive as 10 monthly instalments by default (April to January). You have a statutory right to request 12 monthly instalments instead — email [email protected] with your name, address, and 9-digit billing reference to switch.

If your income has changed and you may qualify for Council Tax Reduction, the South Gloucestershire Council Tax Reduction Guide explains the full income band system and application process.
