South Gloucestershire Council Tax Reduction Calculator: How Much Will You Get?

How the Calculation Works

South Gloucestershire's Council Tax Reduction doesn't use a traditional means-tested formula. Instead, the council looks at one number: your weekly household earned income. That number determines which band you fall into, and the band sets your reduction as a flat percentage of your council tax bill.

No complicated taper rates. No personal allowances to add up. Just seven bands with fixed percentages.

Running the Numbers

Here's how to estimate your reduction for 2026/27:

Step 1 — Find your weekly household earned income. For employment, use pay after tax and National Insurance, with 50% of pension contributions deducted; for self-employment, use net earnings. Benefits like Universal Credit, PIP, and Carer's Allowance don't count.

Step 2 — Match it to the band:

Weekly Earned Income Your Reduction
£0 77%
£0.01 – £50 60%
£50.01 – £100 40%
£100.01 – £140 20%
£140.01 – £190 15%
£190.01 – £230 10%
£230.01 and over 0%

Step 3 — Apply any discounts to your bill first (like the 25% Single Person Discount), then multiply the discounted bill by your reduction percentage.

Three Worked Examples

A single person in Bradley Stoke on Universal Credit, no earnings: Band B property, gross bill £1,997.56. Single Person Discount knocks off 25%, leaving £1,498.17. With £0 earned income → 77% reduction = £1,153.59 off. Annual bill: £344.58 (about £29 a month).

A couple in Almondsbury, one earner on £120/week: Band D property, £2,508.55 bill. No discount (two adults). Earned income £120/week → £100.01–£140 band → 20% reduction = £501.71 off. Annual bill: £2,006.84 (about £167 a month).

A self-employed person in Bradley Stoke averaging £165/week: Band B property, gross £1,997.56. Single Person Discount reduces to £1,498.17. Earned income £165/week → £140.01–£190 band → 15% reduction = £224.73 off. Annual bill: £1,273.44 (about £106 a month).

The 23% Minimum Payment

Even at maximum reduction, you still pay 23% of your bill. On a Band D property in an average South Gloucestershire parish (around £2,500), that's roughly £575 a year — about £48 a month from basic subsistence benefits.

If that 23% is unmanageable, you may be able to apply for additional help through the council's Section 13A(1)(c) Exceptional Hardship Fund or the Crisis and Resilience Fund (freephone 0800 953 7778).

What the Council's Own Calculator Doesn't Tell You

National benefit calculators like Entitledto and Turn2us can give rough estimates, but they don't always reflect South Gloucestershire's specific band boundaries or the 77% cap. And a calculator result is not an application — you still need to submit a separate claim to the council.

The calculation also changes if you have non-dependant adults in the household. Standard deductions may reduce your award before the percentage is applied.

For a step-by-step calculation worksheet with all the band thresholds, capital rules, and non-dependant deduction amounts, the South Gloucestershire Council Tax Reduction Guide includes worked examples for every household type.
