How to Apply for Council Tax Reduction in Shropshire
You've worked out you might qualify for Council Tax Reduction in Shropshire — but actually getting the claim submitted is where most people stall. The council doesn't make it automatic, even if you're already on Universal Credit, and a missed step can mean starting over.
Three Ways to Apply
Shropshire Council accepts applications through its online CitizenAccess portal, by printed paper form, or by phone for initial details. The online route is fastest because uploaded documents go straight into the system, but you'll need to create an account first.
Online portal: Head to the Shropshire Council website and look for the Council Tax Support section under Benefits. You'll create a CitizenAccess login, fill in the application screens, and upload your evidence documents as scans or photos. Keep file sizes under the portal's limit — large phone photos sometimes time out mid-upload.
Paper form: Download the combined Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support claim form from the council website, or call 0345 678 9002 to request one by post. It runs over 20 pages, so set aside a solid hour. Post the completed form with photocopies of your documents (keep originals).
Phone start: Calling 0345 678 9002 lets you register an intention to claim. This locks in your contact date for entitlement purposes, buying you time to gather documents. You still need to complete the full application within the timeframe the council sets.
What Happens After You Submit
Once your application reaches the council, they'll check whether everything's there. If documents are missing, you'll get a formal evidence request with a one-month deadline. If you don't provide the required evidence in time, the council may cancel or refuse the claim, and you may need to make a new application.
If everything checks out, the council runs a means test comparing your income and savings against their thresholds. You'll receive a written decision notice spelling out exactly how they calculated your award: your net income, applicable amount, any non-dependant deductions, and the weekly support figure.
The award gets credited directly to your Council Tax account as a discount — no cash payment lands in your bank. You'll then receive an adjusted bill showing the reduced amount you actually owe.
The Universal Credit Trap
Claiming Universal Credit through the DWP does not create a Council Tax Reduction claim with Shropshire Council. These are separate systems. If you've just moved onto UC and haven't filed a separate local application, you have no council tax support at all — the full bill is accruing.
File your Shropshire application as soon as your UC claim is confirmed. The earlier you apply, the earlier your entitlement starts (from the Monday after the council receives your claim).

Tips for a Clean Submission
Gather your documents before you start the form. You'll need identity documents for yourself and any partner, proof of your National Insurance number, your latest UC statement showing all elements, three months of bank statements for every account, and payslips if you're working. Having everything ready prevents the back-and-forth that triggers that one-month evidence clock.
If someone is helping you apply — a family member, a support worker — they can prepare documents and assist with the form, but the legal declaration is yours. For them to deal with the council directly on your behalf, you'll need to submit a signed letter of authority.
Our Shropshire Council Tax Reduction Guide walks through every screen of the application, with a document checklist you can tick off before you submit. It covers the exact evidence formats the council accepts and the common upload mistakes that trigger rejection letters.
