Shropshire Council Tax Payment Plan: How to Spread Your Bill Over 12 Months

Standard Instalments vs 12-Month Spread

By default, Shropshire Council bills council tax in 10 monthly instalments running from April to January. That leaves February and March as payment-free months — but it also means each instalment covers a larger share of the annual bill.

If 10 larger payments do not suit your budget, you can request to spread the bill over 12 monthly instalments instead, running April through March. Shropshire Council offers this as a standard option — you do not need to demonstrate financial hardship. Simply contact the revenues team through the CitizenAccess portal at shropshire.gov.uk or call 0345 678 9002 and ask for the 12-month payment schedule.

The total amount you pay is the same. The difference is purely cash-flow: 12 smaller payments instead of 10 larger ones. For a household receiving Council Tax Reduction that still owes a 20% minimum payment, spreading that remaining balance over 12 months rather than 10 can make each instalment noticeably more manageable.

What Happens If You Miss a Payment

Missing an instalment triggers the statutory enforcement sequence. After one missed payment, Shropshire Council sends a reminder notice giving you seven days to pay the arrears. Pay within that window and your instalment plan continues as normal.

Miss a second instalment (or fail to clear the first within the reminder period) and the council issues a final notice. This is the critical moment: a final notice cancels your right to pay by instalments entirely. The full remaining annual balance becomes due as a single lump sum. If that lump sum is not paid, the council applies for a court summons and liability order.

The key takeaway: one missed payment is recoverable. Two missed payments (or ignoring a reminder) can collapse your entire instalment arrangement. If you anticipate difficulty making a payment, contact Shropshire Council before the due date — they may be able to adjust your schedule.

If You Are Already Behind

If your instalment rights have been cancelled and you owe a lump sum, contact the revenues team immediately. While there is no automatic right to reinstate instalments at this stage, the council does have discretion to set up a special payment arrangement. The sooner you make contact, the more likely an arrangement can be agreed before the debt reaches the court summons stage.

For anyone facing genuine financial hardship, check whether you qualify for Council Tax Reduction — it reduces your underlying bill, making future payments smaller. The Section 13A discretionary hardship discount is also available in exceptional circumstances.

If the debt has already progressed to a liability order, contact a free debt advice service — StepChange (stepchange.org), National Debtline (0808 808 4000), or Citizens Advice Shropshire (03444 99 11 00). They can negotiate realistic repayment plans and ensure you are receiving all the support you are entitled to.
