Croydon Council Tax Payment Plan: Direct Debit, 12-Month Spread, and Options
How Council Tax Payments Work in Croydon
By default, Croydon Council collects council tax in 10 monthly instalments from April to January. February and March are payment-free months. You can pay by direct debit (the council's preferred method), online through the Croydon website, by phone, or at a Post Office with a payment card.
Direct debit is the simplest option because it adjusts automatically when your bill changes — for example, when a Council Tax Reduction award is applied or when a mid-year reassessment alters your instalment amount.
Switching to 12 Monthly Instalments
If 10 larger payments are harder to manage than 12 smaller ones, you have a statutory right to request a 12-month payment schedule. This is not a concession or a hardship measure — it is set out in Regulation 21(1A)–(1D) and Schedule 1, paragraph 2(3A), of the Council Tax (Administration and Enforcement) Regulations 1992, inserted by regulations 2(13)–(14) of the Council Tax (Administration and Enforcement) (Amendment) (No.2) (England) Regulations 2012 (SI 2012/3086).
Request the switch in writing to Croydon Council, for example through its online council tax portal. The number of instalments for the current year depends on when the council issues the revised notice: 12 if issued by 15 April, or the number of whole months remaining if issued on or after 16 April. You can also request 12 instalments for the following year. On a £2,599.91 annual Band D bill, 12 instalments would be about £217 a month.
When You Miss a Payment
If you miss a direct debit or fail to make a payment on time, the council sends a reminder after you are more than seven days late. You have seven days to bring the account up to date. If you do, the normal instalment schedule continues.
If your account falls into arrears again later in the year, the council sends a second reminder and gives you seven days to bring the account up to date. If you do not, it issues a final notice and you lose the right to pay by instalments; it can then demand the full remaining balance for the year.
If you know in advance that you will miss a payment — a delayed wage, a benefit reassessment, an unexpected expense — contact the council before the due date. You may be able to arrange a revised payment date or adjusted instalment without triggering the formal recovery process.

Payment Plans After Falling Behind
Once the council has issued a court summons (which adds £117.50 in Croydon summons costs), the instalment schedule is already void. At that point, the council or its enforcement agents may agree to a special arrangement — a catch-up payment plan spread over several months.
These arrangements are discretionary. The council is not obliged to offer one, but in practice they often do if you engage and demonstrate what you can afford. Contact the revenues team directly rather than ignoring correspondence.
If you are behind on council tax and struggling, free debt advice from StepChange, National Debtline (0808 808 4000), or Citizens Advice Croydon is the correct first step. They can negotiate with the council on your behalf and ensure any arrangement is affordable.
Reducing What You Owe in the First Place
A payment plan manages the timing of what you owe; Council Tax Reduction reduces the amount itself. If your household income is low enough to fall within Croydon's income bands, you could be entitled to a discount of up to 75% (or more for protected groups).
The Croydon Council Tax Reduction guide covers the eligibility criteria, the income band table, and the application process — getting the discount applied before worrying about instalment schedules is almost always the right order of operations.
