Council Tax Reduction When Moving to Redbridge: What You Need to Know
Council Tax Reduction doesn't follow you when you move. If you had CTR in your old borough and you're relocating to Redbridge, your award stops at the old address and you need a brand-new application with Redbridge. There's no transfer mechanism between councils. This catches people every year — they assume the support continues and end up with months of full-rate bills before they realise.
Apply as Soon as You Move In
Your new CTR claim in Redbridge starts from the Monday after the council receives your application, not from the date you moved in. That gap matters. If you move on 1 March but don't apply until 1 May, you'll owe two months of council tax at the full rate.
The fix: apply online through the Redbridge portal (eforms.redbridge.gov.uk) as soon as you become liable for Council Tax at the new address. Every week of delay can leave you with more full-rate liability before any award is made.
If you're already receiving Universal Credit, moving to Redbridge requires a separate online Council Tax Reduction application and evidence. The Council Tax Reduction box on an initial UC application triggers a notification to Redbridge, but it does not guarantee an award.
What Changes Between Boroughs
Redbridge runs its own five-tier working-age CTR scheme, which may be significantly different from what your old borough offered. Key things that may change:
- Maximum reduction percentages: Redbridge's scheme caps working-age support between 36% and 73% of liability depending on your scheme tier. Some boroughs offer up to 100%, others cap lower.
- Earnings thresholds: Redbridge uses £313/week net earnings for households with children and £234/week for those without. Your old borough may have used different thresholds or a traditional 20% taper model.
- Non-dependant deductions: Redbridge charges £10.20/week for non-working adults and £20.40/week for working adults in Schemes 2–5. Scheme 1 (disability) waives them entirely.
- Minimum award: Redbridge applies a £10/week minimum — if the calculated award falls below that, you get nothing. Not every borough has this floor.
The council tax band on your new property will be different too, which changes the gross liability before any reduction is applied. Check your new band at gov.uk/council-tax-bands as soon as you know the address.
Evidence You'll Need for the New Application
Redbridge requires the same evidence whether you're a new resident or a long-standing one:
- Proof of identity (passport, driving licence, or birth certificate)
- National Insurance number
- Your new Redbridge council tax reference number (from your first bill or the online account)
- Latest UC statement if you're claiming Universal Credit
- Two months of bank statements showing capital and income
- Payslips (two monthly or five weekly) if you're employed, or profit-and-loss accounts if self-employed
- Proof of non-dependant income if other adults live in the property
Upload everything within one month of the date the council requests evidence. Redbridge does not send reminder letters before processing or closing incomplete claims; contact the Benefits Service if you cannot provide everything by the deadline.

Overlap Period: Closing Your Old Claim
Notify your old borough as soon as you move out. Their CTR award should end on the date you leave the property. If they continue the award after you've gone, the overpayment gets recovered — usually by increasing any remaining council tax balance at the old address.
Timing the transition is important for direct debits. Cancel or redirect the old borough's direct debit once you've confirmed the final balance. Set up a new direct debit for Redbridge council tax as soon as you receive your first bill. A gap in payments during the move can snowball into arrears surprisingly fast.
If You Moved Months Ago and Didn't Apply
You can still claim CTR now. Redbridge allows backdating of up to 12 months for working-age applicants, but you must demonstrate continuous good cause — a valid reason why you didn't apply earlier. "I didn't know I had to reapply" may not meet the good-cause threshold on its own, but combined with other circumstances (health issues, caring responsibilities, language barriers), it can be accepted.
Apply now and include a written backdating request explaining the delay. The council evaluates each case individually. Even if backdating is refused, you'll at least secure the reduction going forward.
Our Redbridge Council Tax Reduction guide covers the full application process, all five scheme tiers, and the backdating procedure.
