Plymouth Council Tax Reduction Calculator: How to Estimate Your Discount
Plymouth's Council Tax Support scheme uses income bands rather than a taper formula. You can estimate your reduction once you know three things: your assessed net weekly income, your household type, and your property band.
How Plymouth's Income Band System Works
Plymouth's 2026/27 Council Tax Support scheme sorts working-age households into five income bands, each giving a fixed percentage discount — 80%, 60%, 40%, 20%, or 0%. Your net weekly income (after disregards) determines which band you fall into, and the discount applies to your net Council Tax liability after any other discounts like the 25% single person reduction.
The key numbers you need before you can estimate your reduction:
- Your assessed net weekly income — earned wages after tax and National Insurance, plus any assessable benefits, with the scheme's standard earnings disregard and eligible childcare-cost adjustments applied. Child Benefit, PIP, DLA, Carer's Allowance, and the housing costs element of Universal Credit are disregarded.
- Your household type — single person, couple, lone parent with one child, or household with a child under five or multiple children. Each type has its own band thresholds.
- Your property band — if your property is Band F, G, or H, your reduction is calculated on the Band E rate instead.
Step-by-Step Calculation
Here is how to estimate your weekly Council Tax Reduction in Plymouth for 2026/27.
Step 1: Work out your assessed net weekly income. Add up earned income after tax and NI and any assessable benefits (such as the standard allowance of Universal Credit, JSA, or ESA). Apply the scheme's standard earnings disregard and any eligible childcare-cost adjustment. Exclude disregarded income such as PIP, DLA, Carer's Allowance, Child Benefit, and UC housing costs.
Step 2: Find your household band. Using your household type and net weekly income, check which of the five bands you fall into. For a single person with no children, Band 1 (80% discount) covers income from £0 to £104.99 per week. Band 2 (60%) runs from £105 to £170.99. Band 3 (40%) is £171 to £236.99. Band 4 (20%) is £237 to £339.99. Above £340, you get nothing.
Families with children get significantly wider bands — a household with a child under five qualifies for 80% support with income up to £328.99 per week.
Step 3: Calculate your net Council Tax liability. Start with your annual Council Tax charge for your property band. Apply any personal discount, such as the single person discount, then apply the Disabled Band Reduction Scheme if you qualify. Divide by 52 to get the weekly figure.
Step 4: Apply the discount percentage. Multiply your weekly net liability by your band percentage. That is your weekly reduction. Subtract any non-dependant deductions (£4.90 per week per non-dependant adult in your home) to get the final award.
The £6,000 Capital Rule
Before any of this matters, check your savings. Plymouth applies a strict £6,000 capital limit — if your total household savings, bank balances, ISAs, Premium Bonds, and investments equal or exceed £6,000, your entitlement is zero regardless of income. There is no taper or tariff income calculation between thresholds; it is a binary cut-off.

A Worked Example
A single parent with one child aged seven has an assessed weekly income of £280 after applicable disregards. Child Benefit is excluded from the calculation. The £280 places them in Band 2 (60% reduction) under the one-child household table (£263 to £328.99).
They live in a Band B property with an annual charge of roughly £1,600. After the 25% single person discount, their net weekly liability is about £23.08. A 60% reduction gives them approximately £13.85 off per week — leaving around £9.23 to pay.
What No Calculator Can Tell You
Online benefit calculators like Turn2us and Entitledto can provide an estimate, but they cannot submit your application or determine your final entitlement. Plymouth processes applications in an average of 21 days, and your entitlement generally runs from the Monday after the council receives your formal claim.
If you want to understand exactly how each income band, disregard, and deduction affects your household before you apply, the Plymouth Council Tax Reduction Guide walks through every scenario with worked examples for each household type.
