Pension Age Council Tax Support in Central Bedfordshire
The Key Difference: Up to 100% Reduction
If you have reached State Pension credit qualifying age and live in Central Bedfordshire, your council tax support is governed by the national prescribed scheme — not the local working-age scheme. The most important difference: the national scheme still allows reductions of up to 100%. There is no mandatory 25% minimum payment for pension-age claimants.
This means the April 2026 change that capped working-age support at 75% does not affect you. Eligible pensioners on very low incomes can still have their entire council tax bill covered.
Automatic Three-Month Backdating
Pension-age claimants also benefit from automatic backdating of up to three months. You do not need to prove good cause or submit a separate backdating form — it happens by default. If you should have been receiving support during the three months before your application, the council credits that period automatically.
Working-age residents, by contrast, must prove continuous good cause for every month they want backdated, using the formal Backdating Request Form.
Mixed-Age Couples
If one partner has reached pension age and the other has not, the rules depend on your benefit status. Under current national welfare transition rules, if the couple receives Universal Credit, you are assessed under the local working-age scheme — meaning the 75% cap and income bands apply.
If your household's benefit status changes, check with CBC which scheme applies. The council's guidance says a mixed-age couple receiving Universal Credit is assessed under the local working-age scheme.

Where to Apply
You still apply directly to Central Bedfordshire Council — the same online portal and contact details (0300 300 8000, [email protected]). The combined application form handles both working-age and pension-age claims; the council determines which scheme applies based on your date of birth and benefit status.
For detailed pension-age council tax reduction rules, the national scheme is covered in the England-wide pensioner guide. For the working-age Central Bedfordshire scheme (income bands, hardship fund, appeals), see the Central Bedfordshire Council Tax Reduction Guide.
