Documents Needed for Council Tax Support in Nottingham
Get These Right the First Time
Missing or incorrect documents are a common reason Council Tax Support claims stall in Nottingham. The council aims to process complete applications in about 14 days. If evidence is missing, it sends a written request giving you one month to supply it; if you miss the deadline, the claim is rejected and you may need to restart the application or appeal.
Nottingham City Council does not accept photocopies for income and capital verification. You need original documents or verified digital uploads through the official online portal.
The Full Evidence Checklist
Identity verification — for you and your partner:
- Passport, UK driving licence, birth certificate, or marriage certificate
- Must be the original document or a clear digital scan uploaded through the portal
National Insurance number — for everyone in the household aged 16 and over:
- P45, P60, official DWP award letter, or NI number card
Earned income — your most recent pay records:
- Five consecutive weekly payslips, three fortnightly slips, or two monthly slips
- These must show the most recent pay periods, not older ones
Universal Credit — if you receive UC:
- The complete multi-page UC statement from your journal, showing all elements, earnings deductions, and net award
- A bank statement showing the UC deposit is not sufficient
Capital and savings — for every account you and your partner hold:
- Full bank statements, building society statements, and ISA records covering the last two months
- Required if your total capital is near or below the £6,000 limit
Immigration status — if you are a non-UK national who arrived in the UK within the past five years:
- Home Office share code, biometric residence permit, or passport stamps showing leave to remain
How to Upload
All evidence goes through the online portal at myaccount.nottinghamcity.gov.uk. The council accepts digital photos and scans, but they must be legible — blurry phone photos of crumpled payslips are rejected.
For each document, make sure the full page is visible, all text is readable, and account holder names and dates are not cut off. Bank statements must show the account holder's name, the full statement period, and every transaction — not just the opening and closing balances.
If you genuinely cannot use the online portal, you can submit paper documents at the ASK HERE desks at Bulwell Riverside Centre, The Mary Potter Centre, or St Ann's Valley Centre. Postal submissions go to Admail 4270, Nottingham, NG1 9YZ.

What Happens When Evidence Is Missing
The council sends a written request listing what is still needed. You have one month from the date of that letter to supply it. If the claim is refused, check the decision letter for the next steps. The usual entitlement start date is the Monday after the council receives the application; a recorded intention-to-claim date is protected only if the full application is completed within one month.
For a printable evidence preparation checklist that walks through every document category with format specifications, the Nottingham Council Tax Reduction guide includes one you can work through before opening the online form.
